Undone season 2, episode 8 recap – the ending explained

Now that Alma and her family can get through the door and heal the family through multiple generations, Jacob has a stroke. Alma wants to go back and change things to save her father’s life, but Jacob will not hear of it. Helping fix his mother’s life was the greatest gift Alma could ever have given him. Back in Mexico, Jacob is healed up, and they take him to Ms. Alejandro’s house. The older woman asks Alma what they found behind the door. She tells her, you know, helping the mother, healing generations, etc. Surprisingly, she then asks if they found anything else? Alma tells her no, which brings a strange look to Ms. Alejandro’s face.

The next night Alma is woken up by a phone call from her mother. She is about to answer when the misty fog returns, and sees his father approach. Alma’s grandmother and great-grandparents then accompany him. Jacob waves goodbye. As he turns and walks away, she rests her back against the headboard and has a look of understanding and sorrow.

The fog returns shortly after, again while at Ms. Alejandro’s home. It raises a bowl of water, so Becca and Alma use their powers to see a different timeline. This brings them back to the day Alma was sitting in front of that cave near the ruins waiting for her father to re-emerge. Alma now knows why she has had this feeling of unfinished business and regret.

They see Alma in a behavioral hospital, and her family is concerned. She has been cutting herself and has given up on life. Alma tells Becca that she must go back to give Alma in her old timeline something she now has: hope. Alma spends one last night with her family, laughing, eating, and being happy. She thanks her mother for everything and is so pleased that her mother has found love and purpose in her life. She hugs her daughter without making a passive-aggressive comment while not ruining the moment. Alma then comments on those very wet dishwashing gloves that have now left soap suds in her hair.

The ending

As Becca walks Alma to the door, she opens it and sees her old self approaching the cave and calling out for her father. She takes a step and turns back to her sister, who tells her not to forget her. “How could I?” Becca replies. Alma is now transported back to being outside the cave with her sister, who is on the phone with her mother. They are safely returning, climbing in their car to drive back.

As Alma looks over the horizon and the cave getting farther and farther in the distance, Becca asks if she sees something. Alma replies, “No, let’s go home.”
