Shining Girls season 1, episode 3 recap
The news reporter, Dan, awakes on the bus with a bloody forearm and later argues with his son over going to school. As it soon becomes clear that Dan is in a similar timeline with Kirby, the creep, Harper, watches from outside. Unaware of what is occurring, Kirby asks Dan why he took a leave of absence, to which he claims he wanted to spend more time with his kid. Yet, it seems that it didn’t pay off as it doesn’t appear that Dan and Freddie have the greatest relationship.
Kirby and Dan search records as Harper spies on another woman. And through Harper’s knowledge of the future, he talks a shopper into shoplifting. Once she tries to leave, Harper follows and creeps her out. MASSIVELY. As Harper continues to be a creep, he freaks out Dan’s son, Freddie. As Kirby investigates further, she learns that not only did her attacker leave a matchbox inside of her, but he had a further eight possible victims. As Kirby decides to take the matchbox, Dan warns that stealing it could affect a future trial.
As Kirby notes down every detail, she soon learns that the attacker/killer has left something in each of the victims, with the earliest currently from 1972. Not only is the info crazy for Kirby, he means that she wakes up at Dan’s place. Eventually, Kirby wakes up at Dan’s place, and his son, Freddie, makes her coffee.
After Dan tells his boss, Tabby, that his source is Kirby, she asks if he still has negatives on Jerry Matheson. In a weird but brilliant scene, Julia remains oblivious as Harper searches her house. Once Harper finds photographs that seriously freak her ( and the viewers) out, the story becomes a lot deeper.
The ending
Kirby finds that a key is linked to Jinny, who is still alive. Dan parties and does a shit ton of drugs, which Marcus watches. Kirby speaks to Jinny and asks if she knows the other victims, but she freaks her out. In the following (and ending scene), Harper NEARLY/CONSIDERS killing Dan! Although, he ultimately decides not to throw him in front of a train. And that ends another brilliant episode.
The ending definitely kept me on the edge of my seat; I was wondering whether the show was going to borrow from House of Cards and have a major subway death. Thankfully, for fans of Dan, that didn’t happen. But, once again, as I said with the previous episode, it’s hard to guess what may happen next. The show is a strange watch, which by the way, is what makes it great, and Apple TV has done a great job of releasing great shows lately. And with everything that’s happening with Netflix lately, maybe Apple TV is soon going to become the leading streamer.
