Maverix is a kid-friendly series on Netflix, an Australian motocross drama that follows the well-worn template of many other sports shows that are all about teaching moral lessons through teamwork and friendly competition. Across ten episodes, it’s full of the usual stuff you’d expect, building to a big climax at the Nationals and, of course, plenty of setup for a continuation. But are we likely to see one?
At the time of writing, we have no news either way about the future of Maverix. However, the futures of kids’ shows seem to follow a slightly different trajectory from other properties. Netflix values brand-driven properties that they can wring for all they’re worth, and the best case study to look at here would probably be Malibu Rescue. Despite being very middling and predictable, it got two feature films and a TV season, and it’s really no better than Maverix in terms of quality. Being an Australian production with an obvious affection for the setting of Alice Springs and the sport of motocross, there’s every chance that there will be enough interest here to justify another run-around, even if the show doesn’t set the world alight in terms of raw viewership.
If I had to make a prediction, I’d say there’s probably a better-than-average chance that we see more of this show.
A sports drama skewing more towards kids on the younger side, Maverix tells the story of the titular team as they work to compete in the motocross Nationals. Under the leadership of a famed former racer named Griffo and his son Scott, the team of rambunctious tearaways has to learn how to get on and work together in order to succeed, becoming firm friends in the process.
