Summary
The Lake is amusing and more interesting as the chess match continues between Justin and Maisy.

The Lake season 1, episode 2 recap
After doing some research, Justin finds out that the only way he can inherit the cottage is if Maisy dies. Now, since I do not envision The Lake turning into a revenge horror thriller, Justin comes up with an alternative plan. The cottage is not up to code so he will force the issue, and Maisy will not be able to afford the fix. Billie, however, makes a fair point. How will Justin afford to update the home and bring it up to code if Maisy can’t? Justin refers it to future Justin.
Maisy stops by and invites Billie and Justin over to the cottage. The drinks are poured, and the games start, including movie charades. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, James and the Giant Peach, and Kill Bill (I am guessing volume one) appear. Of course, Justin gets a film that Opal describes as the foundation of cinema, Belle et la Bete. Though, when Riley (Travis Nelson) hears Opal’s description, he guesses Mean Girls. Suddenly, the man Justin has developed a crush on since insulting him at the local gas station falls for him even more. (Justin told Billie that Mean Girls is his bible in the pilot).
However, it turns out Maisy is clever and cunning. She anticipates Justin at some point investigating and finding out about the home. She even sees the weak spot, which includes the renovations. So she invites Riley over, knowing a cute guy will distract Justin from the upgrades. This moves game night into coupling up. They play a game of sardines. Maisy hides, and Victor finds her as they talk in the closet. Justin and Riley flirt and play a game of Connect 4. Billie and Killian are dared to spend some minutes together in the outhouse, but the mean girls lock them inside, despite knowing Killian’s issues with being claustrophobic. And finally, Wayne and Jayne play in the Lin bedroom, using Maisy’s vibrator and Victor’s shirt to knock each other’s socks off.
The ending
When Billie finally breaks down the door from inside the outhouse, she emerges with scrapes and cuts on her right shoulder. Maisy, showing an act of kindness, takes her in and cleans the wound with alcohol. She even motherly applies a band-aid and has a heart-to-heart with her niece. Billie is taken back by her kindness. She does not seem to be the sinister stepsister that her birth father described. Well, that’s until she drops this news right on her head. Killian’s girlfriend, Sara, comes to town and stays at the cottage next week.
We need to give Justin some credit by the end of the episode. He finds some documents that prove Maisy has a meeting with the board tomorrow to get approval for renovations. She wants to tear the whole thing down and destroy Justin’s legacy. Which, he tells his birth daughter, is not just his but hers. They will go down to the board meeting tomorrow to state their case to get back what is rightly his.
