When a show is successful, especially one based on ever-expanding source material, there is always talk of spin-offs. The Umbrella Academy is a hugely popular property over at Netflix right now, with lots of room for potential sequels and spin-off series. In this article, I will be exploring all these possible future projects and assessing the likelihood of any of them actually seeing the light of day. Here’s a breakdown of all the possible spin-off series:

Will there be a spin-off series of The Umbrella Academy?

An Animated Series

The Walking Dead franchise has spawned plenty of spin-off shows, and The Boys released an animated series titled The Boys Presents: Diabolical earlier this year, with a college spin-off in the works too. This franchise-building has become commonplace, so no wonder The Umbrella Academy is also getting in on the action. They could very easily follow The Boys with an anthology of animated shorts.

The comic-book series has already released four of its own short stories: ‘Mon Dieu!’, ‘…But The Past Ain’t Through With You’, ‘Safe & Sound’ and ‘Anywhere But Here.’ As well as a one-shot issue called: ‘Hazel and Cha-Cha Save Christmas.’ These shorts focus on one-off storylines, including a murder mystery and a flashback to when the Umbrellas formed a punk rock band. They could be light and fun, with space to try out lots of varying animation styles, like Love, Death & Robots. The series could also shine a light on many secondary characters, such as Christopher, Pogo, and the triplet assassins. Or dive more into the secrets of The Commission, for example. The possibilities are really endless on this one. I’d say this is a doable spin-off, yet it won’t be high on Netflix’s agenda.

Viktor Spin-off

Netflix is reportedly planning a spin-off series for Elliot Page and his Viktor character, although there has been no official confirmation on the matter thus far. An article was published back in 2020 on We Got This Covered with the scoop. He’s not my favorite character, but there are lots of ways you could play this show. Focusing on his transitioning in more detail, his early years when Reginald muted his powers, or his time away from the Academy. That ten-year gap is rife with possibilities. This is another spin-off series I could see happening, but one that would definitely be overshadowed by a Klaus project.

Klaus Spin-off

Creator Steve Blackman spoke of an array of possible spin-off shows involving the ever-lovable Klaus on a press junket for the second season. Speaking to Digital Spy, he mentioned ‘Klaus and Ben’ or ‘Klaus and Diego’ having their own six-part limited series exploring an ‘ever-changeable’ dynamic duo on their own mini-adventures. Actor Robert Sheehan also expressed a desire for a ‘Klaus and Luther’ show. But the greatest indicator of a Klaus spin-off comes thanks to Gerard Way’s latest comic book outing, titled: You Look Like Death.

You Look Like Death is set about a decade before the TV series and focuses on an eighteen-year-old Klaus who moves to Hollywood and gets entangled with a vampire drug-lord, as you do. This sounds like it has the most potential, with fan-favorite Klaus living it up in California, meeting a whole host of unusual characters. If The Umbrella Academy continues to draw in the viewers, Netflix may very well consider adapting this miniseries in the hopes of expanding this franchise further.
