Summary
This romance drama is slow and steady and offers an easy watch.
Netflix has released the Turkish drama romance film Doom of Love. Written by Yilmaz Erdogan (Grudge; Money Trap), directed by Hilal Saral, and starring Pinar Deniz (Love 101), Boran Kuzum, and Yigit Kirazci, this film has a running time of one hour and forty minutes.
Firat is a hungry-for-work young man, high in debt, and when his ad agency goes bankrupt, he takes himself to a yoga retreat, where he falls in love with a singer. Together with her musician accomplice Yusuf, they go on a journey of self-realization. While they get to the yoga retreat quite quickly in the film, the story still has a slow start and pace.
The film begins with Firat slowly waking up from a coma, and then we are taken back in time to see how he ended up there, which sustains the intrigue. While this is a romantic drama, Firat does play the third wheel a lot. I found his character hard to like. He’s always got someone bailing him out of his ever-growing debt, and I didn’t feel sorry for him.
While his debt was looming, it never felt like a real, deadly threat. The yoga retreat idea was nice from his friends, but with that much debt, would you spend more money on a lavish yoga retreat?
While it is a little slow, the film has a lovely choice of calm music throughout, the cinematography is clear and clean, and we get some beautiful shots of Istanbul. The acting is to a good standard, the actors have good chemistry throughout, and there are some heartfelt moments. The spiritual message of yoga and meditation, and what that can bring to your life, is relatively peaceful and thought-provoking.
Overall, this film is easy to watch. It is nothing original or extraordinary, but it is a nice romance film you can watch on a lazy, rainy day. It has a surprisingly beautiful ending with a kind message.
