This article discusses the possibility of The Longest Night Season 2 and its renewed or cancelled status. It may contain spoilers. You can check out our spoiler-free season review by clicking these words, and the rest of our detailed coverage by clicking these ones.

Netflix’s latest Spanish series is a pacey prison-set thriller with a compelling premise. Across six episodes, the show’s an enticing binge-watch proposition, though it fails to resolve its mysterious narrative by the end, resulting in a frustrating finale with little resolution. However, that will only pique the interest of fans who’re invested, and those fans will doubtlessly be looking into the possibility of a follow-up season. Here’s everything we know so far.

Renewed or cancelled status – Will there be a Season 2 of The Longest Night?

Status: TBC

At the time of writing, it’s unclear what the future of this show will be. Netflix are almost certainly waiting for some viewing figures before they commit, so in that case it’s worth keeping an eye on sites like Netflix Top 10 in order to see how the show is performing.

The good news is that the story has clearly been conceived of as a multi-season narrative. Virtually nothing was resolved by the end of the first season, and there are plenty of directions that the story could head in should this end up being renewed. I couldn’t say for certain, but if The Longest Night develops some fan interest, I think it’s likely we’d see a continuation.

What is The Longest Night?

A six-part Spanish crime thriller set in a psychiatric correctional facility, the show primarily concerns Simon Lago, a notorious serial killer known as the Alligator who finds himself housed in the prison of warden Hugo Roca on Christmas Eve. Simon is due to meet with a judge the next morning, and there are heavily-armed men outside who want to prevent him from doing that at all costs. All Hugo has to do is hand Simon over. However, Simon has had Hugo’s daughter kidnapped, and her captors have instructions to kill her if Simon is released. This hook, along with several other subplots and dynamics involving the prison’s staff and inmates, provide plenty of drama in the first six episodes.

What do we know about Season 2 so far?

While we have very little concrete information, it’s easy to make some educated guesses about where things might go. Spoilers for the first season below.

For one thing, it seems like Hugo and Lennon are going to work together, though it’s unclear as yet precisely what involvement Hugo has with the whole conspiracy since he’s clearly familiar with Laura’s kidnappers and the mysterious fourth man who continued to get phone calls throughout the season. This is definitely a thread that would be tugged on.

There’s also the matter of the inmates, especially since Manuela uncovered Cherokee’s deception when she discovered the prison doctor alive and well. That and Sara’s handshake agreement with Javi remain unaddressed, as well as the fate of Raquel’s child, and what will happen to Bastos.

In other words, there’s plenty of meat on the bones of this show.
