Fans of the series Becoming Elizabeth will be upset to learn that it was canceled before it could get moving.

Starz has brought to their network (and app) a new costume drama, which presents the politically turbulent period following the death of England’s King Henry VIII. The series stars Alicia Von Rittberg (Emma in Fury) — she represents the young woman who became Queen Elizabeth I. The series comes from playwright Anya Reiss and stars Romola Garai as Princess Mary. We will see Elizabeth as an orphaned teenager who becomes intoxicated with politics on her mission to secure the crown.

Filming locations include Cardiff Castle in Wales. Season 1 has eight episodes and will end on August 7, 2022.

Becoming Elizabeth Season 2 Canceled

January 29th, 2024 Update

Becoming Elizabeth is canceled and we will not be getting a Season 2, unfortunately. Deadline confirmed this in November 2022, stating that ratings and viewership were the key reason. Looks like there was not enough support to keep it sustainable on the network.

July 18th, 2022 Update

At the time of writing this article, Becoming Elizabeth has not been renewed for a second season, but we wouldn’t rule out a renewal just yet. First of all, Alicia von Rittberg has been an excellent leading character in the series, with the star reaching new heights. It will be difficult for Starz to turn down the potential of where this series could go. For instance, look at Netflix’s The Crown, which has spanned several seasons and has taken on different high-profile cast members as their historical characters grow older. There’s plenty of potential here.

Secondly, from a critical perspective, Becoming Elizabeth has done well, achieving 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and 73 out of 100 on Metacritic. These are generally favourable reviews, meaning there will be an appetite to see this historical drama grow.

It would be a great shame to see a series like this not get renewed. However, judging by how the world works, it will all boil down to viewership. If the network deems its viewership good enough, expect a second-season announcement very soon.
