Everyone loves an underdog story. At its core, I suppose that’s what Extraordinary Attorney Woo is, and its cases have reflected that. “A Tale About Sodeok-dong I”, which I believe is the season’s first two-parter, is as neat an encapsulation of the theme as you could hope for. There are plans for a highway to pass through a small town, separating Sodeok-Dong into two neighborhoods, entirely against the will of the people that live there.

So, yes, we’re talking big business going directly up against the honest, working-class little people. There’s no mystery around who we’re intended to side with.

Of course, such matters are never especially easy, legally speaking. The people are being shafted, obviously, but with seemingly no viable or cost-effective alternatives, they might just be out of luck. Smartly, Extraordinary Attorney Woo episode 7 allows us to understand the stakes by allowing us to get to grips with the town in all its humble, natural splendor.

Letting the visuals and the local people do the heavy-lifting here means we never really feel the burden of all the case’s details, which we’re to understand are plentiful and complex. It’s always nice when a legal drama doesn’t require a crash course in legalese for the drama to be effective. And of course, with this as a backdrop, we get more character development, especially as regards Young-woo and Jun-ho.

But then there’s Min-woo. What we’re beginning to see quite clearly here is an obvious antagonism in Min-woo, who believes he is being unfairly overlooked due to Young-woo’s connections and, dare one say it, a sympathy vote. Another form of antagonism comes in the form of prosecuting attorney Tae Su-mi, a hotshot shoo-in for the Minster of Justice who nonetheless develops a begrudging respect for Young-woo’s legal acumen. There’s a chance of this character returning, but given that in all likelihood the legal matter will be concluded in tomorrow’s episode, it’s really Young-woo’s burgeoning romance with Jun-ho and fractious rivalry with Min-woo that’ll provide the bulk of the serious drama moving forwards.
