There’s disappointing news to kick off the latest episode of Extraordinary Attorney Woo – Myeong-seok has Stage 3 stomach cancer. Still, at least it kicks off a fun little story about noodles.

Extraordinary Attorney Woo season 1, episode 14 recap

At the risk of repeating myself, the cases in this show rarely matter on their own terms; they’re a backboard for character drama and theming. This whole diversion, though, feels a bit uncharacteristically wasteful, especially since “The Blue Night of Jeju II” is the second half of the case we began in yesterday’s episode. Then again, that wasn’t necessarily the focal point in that episode either.

But Myeong-seok’s ordeal is purposeful. Remember how he was reminiscing about potentially having made the wrong decisions in his life, thus pushing away his ex-wife Ji-su? Well, that has relevance for Young-woo, especially in light of her burgeoning relationship with Jun-ho. Can she make him happy? Will she inevitably turn him into a man like Myeong-seok, full of regret while potentially being on his death bed? These are big questions for anyone to answer.

The result is that Jun-ho ends up kind of heartbroken, and more than a little confused; Young-woo’s inattentiveness is her autism manifesting in a way that isn’t exactly charming, certainly not for him, but is certainly honest and well-observed.

You’ll be pleased to learn that the noodle business does amount to a payoff in quite a nicely written way, despite it feeling like a bit of a slog earlier. But it still remains a sideshow, with the character drama – especially Young-woo and Jun-ho – forming the main event. There are some movements in the matter of Young-woo’s parentage that’ll probably form the bulk of the drama in the final two episodes, but there’s something quietly tragic about this core love story, especially since we know that Young-woo is trying to preserve Jun-ho’s feelings, but is actually hurting him more than necessary because of her social ineptitude. That’s sad and truthful in the way that only the most compelling drama is.
