On Friday, the 2nd of September, 2022, Amazon released one of the most ambitious series of all time. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is a prequel to the LOTR films; it feels unprecedented, even with the mass content production of 100s of universes a year.

However, with anticipation comes negativity. Predictably, the prequel release drew in negative reviews, which is not a surprise when millions watch it.

There are many reasons to watch The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and ignore the negative reviews:

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power – 7 reasons to ignore the negative reviews

Reason 1: review bombing happens all the time

Unfortunately, for various reasons, review bombing is a new trend in the world of entertainment. Groups of people coordinate negative review postings on the likes of IMDB, RT, and Metacritic in the audience reviews section to present a meager score. However, it’s so low that it often becomes unbelievable. Strong sections of fandoms (some that can be deemed toxic) see this as a version of a protest. The usual sign of review bombing is the gulf between highly positive and negative reviews (i.e., a massive surge in 5-star reviews, but on the flip side, a massive surge in 1-star reviews).

There’s a strong admission in the industry that review bombing needs to be solved. However, so far, there are few answers to combat this trend.

Reason 2: the Tolkien Estate is highly precious

There’s a reason why we’ve only had two trilogies and a few video games so far. The Tolkien Estate is highly precious, consisting of rich, beloved material. Tolkien purists want to hold adaptations accountable, ensuring that canon is met and the story is represented correctly. There was always going to be a negative angle with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power because Amazon could not buy all the rights.

There will be some nitpicking here and there, but it’s exciting and comforting to know that the Tolkien Estate co-produced the series with Amazon.

Reason 3: we need more The Lord of the Rings stories

While the story is rich and beautiful, it doesn’t mean we cannot have more stories in this universe as long as the right people are behind it with the right intentions. While this will undoubtedly mean a lot of gaps will be filled and possible extensions of the universe, we can only hope that the creators will respect the world built. If not, then undoubtedly, there will be problems.

Reason 4: outside of the review bombing, reviews are positive

If you look beyond the high-volume review bombing, the reaction to The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has been positive. Viewers and critics alike can understand the budget and effort behind the series purely from the first two episodes.

Reason 5: competition creates a divide

HBO and Amazon have created a war with ratings and viewership. With House of the Dragon and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power releasing weekly episodes two days apart, there will be comparisons and fans claiming which series is better. The Lord of the Rings is no stranger to competition. It went up against Harry Potter with the original trilogy.

But, there’s no reason why audiences cannot enjoy both — House of the Dragon and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is event television, and we should appreciate that.

Reason 6: FOMO

If you are an avid TV series viewer, then why would you miss out on this series? If you were one of those people like me, who did not watch Game of Thrones initially, and had to catch up knowing the spoilers, then you will know that specific fear of missing out. Of course, you may not be as concerned if you are the occasional TV series viewer.

Reason 7: are you a big fan of the LOTR trilogy? Give this a chance!

If The Lord of the Rings films are your favorite of all time, I see little reason not to delve into this series. There will be nostalgia, world-building, and plot context provided at a micro level. This is a fan’s dream to see this story get fleshed out with such financial backing and production. And with season 2 green-lit, there will be no escaping the marketing! Give it a chance!

And there you have it – 7 reasons to ignore the negative reviews for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power! Do you have any more reasons to entice those who may have been absorbed by the review bombing? Comment below.
