We’ve all had those moments of sadness where all we want to do is sit in bed and binge watch sad films on Netflix or shows, often with dramatic or scary plots that just exacerbate our sadness even more. We may choose to binge shows as they give us a sense of comfort, or their plots mimic our own lives in some way that we want to see an uplifting and happy ending where the main characters achieve happiness or success.

At Ready Steady Cut, we have created a list of the best sad films with uplifting endings to remedy your low mood and to help lift your spirits.

Legally Blonde (2001)

This is the ultimate feel good film, about a girl dealing with heartbreak who defies the stereotypes and gets a place at the prestigious Harvard Law School. Rees Witherspoon portrays the lovable and bubbly Elle Woods, who proves that no matter what you’re going through, you can end up achieving happiness and success.

How To Be Single (2016)

If you’re dealing with heartbreak after a breakup, this film is a great option to cheer you up. Dakota Johnson portrays Alice, a newly single free-spirited girl who attempts to find herself after moving to New York. This film depicts the struggles of finding love again after a breakup, but in a humorous way, showing the fun side of casual dating and also being single and focusing on yourself.

Friends (1994)

There’s a reason why Friends almost always makes the list of things to watch when you’re sad or TV shows to watch to cheer you up. Friends is entertaining, comedic, and requires minimal commitment to enjoy. Watching the characters go through the highs and lows of life in a disastrous yet comical way may be just what you need to remedy your sadness and feel better.

La La Land (2016)

This Oscar-winning musical rom-com with a bittersweet ending will certainly lift your spirits and have you singing along. If the presence of Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling on your screen isn’t enough to distract you, the costumes, cinematography and musical numbers sure will. The dramatic elements that are injected throughout this film help it to still feel grounded in reality, despite the spontaneous bursts into song here and there.

Sex Education (2019)

This Netflix-original deals with relationship and friendship issues dealt with by a bunch of teenagers as they try to navigate themselves and their desires. The characters’ ability to inject elements of humour into moments of seriousness or drama adds a quirky and humorous element to the show. Some of the issues dealt with in this show may resonate with you, but the humorous and sometimes heartwarming ways in which these issues are resolved by the characters may help you to feel better about any real life issues.
