Designing Miami season 1 review - a design show with a personal touch

Summary

Quite different from an interior design show. And this is mainly because it focuses just as much on the private lives of the leading cast members, just as much as on the properties shown on screen, if not more.

This review of the Netflix series Designing Miami season 1 does not contain spoilers.

The best part of Designing Miami is how we get an insight into the married life of the two designers, Eilyn and Ray Jimenez. Blending interior design with the juiciness of reality TV, Designing Miami may, on paper, seem to be about interior design; however, it’s the lives of Eilyn and Ray that the audience will stay with.

Designing Miami is an eight-episode series from Netflix. It’s showy, glamorous, and easy on the eye. It may not showcase all areas of Miami realistically. Let’s be honest, it’s nice to see Miami being promoted in a positive light (for a change). As for the couple themselves, they both come from immigrant parents and now own a multi-million dollar business. Throughout the show, we watch them (in a style similar to Keeping Up With The Kardashians) living their best life. And along the way, we watch as they try to design properties.

This show will not be to everyone’s taste, though. Whilst many of the people involved in the show are clearly perfect for TV, some audience members will likely find them annoying. But if you are among those that don’t, Designing Miami could be the perfect watch for you! Some reactions, whether genuine or rehearsed, are very off-putting and take away from the “realistic” nature of the show.

Moving on, in a style quite similar to reality shows, it ends with an event that throws the cast members into chaos. It might be a bit cringy to some. But overwise, it might be able to draw the audience into the next episode. Overall, whilst interior shows and reality shows have both been done several times over, it’s nice to see the two blended together.
