Kevin Bacon and Aldis Hodge returned for a third helping of City on a Hill. Loyal audiences were rewarded by Showtime for a third season. However, shockingly, Showtime has canceled the TV show after three seasons.

This may come as a surprise to many, but with Showtime preparing for consolidations with Paramount+, there were casualties, City on a Hill was one of them.

Why Was City on a Hill Canceled By Showtime for Season 4?

City on a Hill was a popular series and it would not have surprised anyone if it were renewed. With an impressive cast and team, I was certainly shocked to hear of its demise. However, according to Variety, Showtime felt that the Season 3 finale was conclusive. The statement reads:

“We have had nothing but the best experience working with Kevin Bacon, Aldis Hodge and the entire cast and crew, led by showrunner Tom Fontana and fellow executive producers including Jennifer Todd and Jorge Zamacona. We offer our sincerest thanks to everyone.”

It’s tempting to wonder if another network will pick City on a Hill up, but this is highly unlikely. With the cast members taking contracts elsewhere since, it would be difficult to get the project back up and running, especially with how busy Kevin Bacon is.

It’s also possible that City on a Hill required changes in their TV Show slate to make a consolidation with Paramount+ easier. But that’s just mere speculation. The move from Showtime to cancel City on a Hill obviously upset some fans:

We’ll keep you up to date, of course. Let’s hope we have more Kevin Bacon on our screens for this show in the future!
