House of the Dragon season 1, episode 7 recap
Lady Laena’s funeral is held, with Daemon, Rhaenyra, Viserys, and all of Lady Laena’s loved ones present. During the funeral, Alicent’s son Aegon looks very bored during the ceremony. Later, when Viserys offers his condolences to Damon, Damon storms away from him. Corlys and Rhaenys argue. Corlys is desperate to win the throne back. Yet, Rhaenys doesn’t want to, claiming to have given up on that dream a long time ago.
Rhaenyra and Daemon walk beside the sea. She reveals that her marriage has always been a farce, yet because of being named heir, she is happy to live with that burden. When the conversation turns to Alicent, Rhaenyra says she does not believe that Alicent is capable of murder. After Rhaenyra criticizes him for leaving her behind, they end up having sex. After Aemond claims Laenor’s dragon as his own, his cousins argue with him. When the argument turns physical, Aemond gets slashed in the eye.
Once Alicent learns that her son has lost his eye, it causes quite a scene for the family. However, Daemon seems to watch with glee. Alicent says how Rhaenyra’s son tried to kill Aemond. However, Rhaenyra argues it all came from Aemond’s constant insults that they are “bastards.” A claim that could be considered treason. When Aemond is forced to reveal where he heard such claims, he reveals that he heard it from Aegon. Aegon simply tells Viserys that he knows the claims are true, “just look at them.” Viserys demands that the family stop their fights. But that is not good enough; Alicent wants one of Rhaenyra’s son’s eyes in return.
The ending
Since Viserys will not bring justice, Alicent will. She demands that Criston brings her the eye of Lucerys. Viserys will not allow it tough. He then warns that anyone who questions the parentage will have their tongues removed. As he goes to leave, Alicent grabs a knife and charges toward Lucery and Rhaenyra. Rhaenyra and Alicent stand off against each other. When Rhaenyra tells Alicent that everyone sees her as she is, Alicent slashes Rhaenyra’s hand. Alicent backs away, possibly in shock over her actions. Aemond steps forwards and tells his mother not to mourn him as he has gained a dragon.
Afterward, the hand, now her father Ser Otto, once again visits Alicent. He tells her that he has never seen that side of her. As a result, he understands that she has the determination to win “the game.” He instructs her to beg for Visery’s forgiveness, and eventually, they (Ser Otto and Alicent) will prevail. When Alicent attempts to apologize to Viserys, he does not want to speak. Too ill, perhaps? Rhaenyra asks Daemon to bind their blood. If he was her husband, her claim to the throne would not be so easily challenged. But Daemon tells her they cannot marry unless her current husband is dead, something she is more than aware of.
Afterward, Daemon makes plans for Laenor’s death. At the end of the episode, Laenor dies, with his body thrown into a fire. His parents, Corlys and Rhaenys, scream at the sight of his body. And with the plan has worked, Rhaenyra and Daemon get married. So they think. The end scene reveals that Laenor is still alive.
