Summary

Some of the humor starts to dip in the first half of “Bewitched,” but overall, this is another hilarious and enjoyable offering. The cast’s chemistry continues to impress, and the writing successfully hits on every beat, concluding in another satisfying installment.

Our recap of the Hulu series Reboot season 1, episode 6, “Bewitched,” contains spoilers.

Hulu original Reboot has well and truly settled into its groove now, with all the main cast members having their own distinct subplots and the comedy itself hitting more times than not. In “Bewitched” we get to explore more of Reed (played by Keegan-Michael Key) and Bree’s (played by Judy Greer) tumultuous relationship, Clay (played by Calum Worthy) gets stuck into his AA rehabilitation, and both series regulars Hannah (played by Rachel Bloom) and Zack (played by Calum Worthy) find themselves on the verge of starting new romances of their own. The humor may dip a little early on, but this show still delivers with adorable character development and satisfying plot beats.

Reboot season 1, episode 6 recap

Reed’s own storyline kicks off proceedings as he video calls his girlfriend Nora. He’s had to move hotels for the time being and finds himself in close proximity to ex Bree. Nora isn’t too happy about this setup and hangs up, annoyed. Reed and Bree’s rocky relationship has had its ups and downs this season and the showrunners are eager to continue to milk this subplot for all that its worth. Bree wants to embark on a ‘guess who’ style game with Reed, a pastime that they both enjoyed together as a couple, but Reed is apprehensive.

Meanwhile, Hannah gets flustered chatting with HR representative Mallory, and Gordon seizes this opportunity to play Cupid. Hannah is embarrassed to talk relationships with her dad, but Gordon wants the best for his daughter. Hannah explains that Mallory was here to discuss the possibility of two staff members dating, but she refuses to divulge the details. It’s quite an ironic set up that leads to two very different conclusions to the same scenario.

Zack and Elaine are the two aforementioned staff members. Zack wants to ask Elaine out after their fun little day spent together, but Hannah warns Zack, he only has one chance to get it right. If he asks a second time, it could be seen as harassment. Zack is nervous, but wants this to work out. He happens to be filming a rather unusual dream sequence in front of green screen, on wires, with Clay. This involves the duo flying around suspended in the air and he nearly butchers his one chance of asking Elaine out, there and then.

In the writer’s room, Gordon asks about Hannah’s dating history while she is absent. He worries that she has intimacy problems and the gang instantly blame Gordon for this unfortunate character trait. Gordon wants Hannah to date Mallory more than ever now and yearns to right this wrong. He has the staff writers stalk Mallory’s online presence and they conclude that she is single and gay.

Clay talks with director Jerry about his latest steps to improve with AA, he needs to make amends with everyone he’s previously wronged. He wants to start off with Jerry, yet his apology is less than sincere. As punishment for the pain he has caused Jerry and the lackluster apology, the director leaves him suspended from wires to think on what he did. Later, Clay makes a genuine apology that Jerry feels is authentic. Adding that he isn’t that good of an actor, so it must have been from the heart.

The ending

Reed and Bree continue to awkwardly interact with one another at the hotel. Reed begins to join in with Bree’s silly game though and the two start to bond again. They agree to meet later for a meal to discuss their theories, but both individuals change their minds at the last minute. Nora apologizes over the phone and both co-stars realize that this relaxed return to the good old days could be a mistake. Bree does admit that she has enjoyed hanging out with Reed though.

Gordon tries to set up Mallory and Hannah, leading to an awkward writer’s room chat. Hannah eventually plucks up the courage to ask Mallory out on her own terms, and she accepts. It’s a cute moment as the whole writing staff watch from the window as Hannah lands the first date. Zack’s situation doesn’t go quite as well and Elaine declines his invitation. She worries that it could jeopardize her career. They do however meet in secret that night, pretending to bump into each other at the cinema, although an employee also happens to be there and ruins their scheme.
