We had a whirlwind with High School season 1, episode 2 that ended with Simone having an emotional breakdown after one of her patients killed herself. How will that affect the family? What is ahead for Sara and Tegan with school? Let’s dive in.
High School season 1, episode 3 recap
The episode begins with the kids overhearing on the radio that Green Day will be in town. The sisters ask Patrick if they can skip school to get tickets and if they can, can they borrow the money from him? He says they must ask their mom, and he’ll do whatever she says. Back home, the sisters discuss who will go to the concert while waiting for their mom to get home.
Tegan played by Railey Gilliland) and Sara (played by Seazynn Gilliland) have a plan they unleash on their mom using a story she always tells them about a concert experience she had as a kid. Well, it works to their advantage, as she says yes. Simone explains that the concert was so great because of the mushrooms she and their dad took while leading Tegan, asking if they could get some, haha.
We move to the day the concert tickets are sold, and the kids are in a few hours early to snag them. I swear kids these days will never understand the struggle of getting in line HOURS early just to get tickets to a concert. The sisters are with Maya eating some lunch together, and at this moment, Tegan has a chance to spend some time alone with her, but she can’t do it.
Next, at school Maya and Tegan have a little moment in the hallway until they are interrupted by Natalie and Sara, who are super high again. The duo is off to see Phoebe because Natalie has never met her. Tegan is visibly upset because she shouldn’t wander around high like a kite. This leads to Tegan having to bail on plans with Maya to protect her sister, but Maya doesn’t care because she tells her she will go with her.
Maya asks Tegan why she is so scared of the high but retorts that she doesn’t want her sister to die. Then Maya says she has done them before and isn’t dead, followed by if she ever wants to do them, she will do them with her. Back home, Sara tries to get Tegan to listen to something and starts to tell a story about how she thinks this fixed her nightmares, but Tegan corrects her and says that she was the one that had the nightmares.
A few moments later, Tegan calls Maya to hang out with her. And they meet up at a restaurant, and Maya shows up with a joint. They sit inside the restaurant, and Maya calls out Tegan, asking if she gets tired of babysitting her sister. Tegan gets slightly defensive because their relationship kind of fell apart over the summer. Maya opens Tegan’s eyes to a few things she may haven’t seen before.
The day of the concert, Maya shows up and has a little bonding moment with Simone. Then the duo head upstairs to Tegan’s room. Maya does a minor surfacing of Tegan’s bedroom, and we find out that Evan broke up with his girlfriend. Tegan, who thinks Maya likes him for some reason, says maybe this will open the door for them to hang out more—obviously missing the signs that Maya likes her instead.
Now it’s concert time, and Tegan knocks on Sara’s door, who says she isn’t going to the concert now. So instead of falling into her sister’s problems, Tegan heads to the show without her. On the ride home, Tegan talks about how she had the best time at the concert with her mom. When she enters her bedroom, an upset Sara asks to stay in her room tonight. We then see the fade to black with the words Phoebe in white across the screen.
We see Sara reading something she wrote to Phoebe on her bed. Next, Phoebe is writing something for a summer program that slightly upsets Sara because she would be gone if accepted. Then, they both admit they haven’t told anyone about their relationship. Phoebe follows by saying she thinks it’s better to have it be their little secret.
The ending
We see Sara reading something she wrote to Phoebe on her bed. Next, Phoebe is writing something for a summer program that slightly upsets Sara because she would be gone if accepted. Then, they both admit they haven’t told anyone about their relationship. Phoebe follows by saying she thinks having it be their little secret is better. At work, Phoebe is talking to her friend, who is trying to find love. Next, a loud and obnoxious Sara and Natalie enter the restaurant (reminder they are both high).
Back home, Phoebe confronts her again for showing up to her work high. Sara mentions that she messed up and it will never happen again. The following morning, Phoebe’s mom walks in them snuggled up on her bed together, causing her to freak out. Next, Phoebe’s mom questions her about why they are sleeping together. Phoebe rebukes it by saying it must have happened when they were sleeping, and it is a twin bed. It leads to Phoebe’s mom saying she can’t spend the night anymore.
As the episode ends, Phoebe tells Sara the news about not being able to sleep over there anymore. Finally, we discover why Sara was so upset and didn’t go to the concert because Phoebe says they should go back to being friends, as it is easier.
