Summary

Amanda Fix steals the show with an incredible performance, as “Hello, I’m Right Here” is the best episode to date.

This recap of the Amazon Freevee series High School (2022) season 1, episode 6, “Hello I’m Right Here,” contains spoilers.

We had a bit of a filler episode of High School last week that ended with a bit of an emotional bang. From the sisters getting grounded for lying to the bonding over music and trying to repair their relationship with their Mom. Do the sisters finally get some freedom back? Does their relationship continue to flourish? Let’s dive in.

High School season 1, episode 6 recap

We kick off the episode with the sisters at piano practice with the teacher impressed because it seems they practiced. Next, the sisters share a moment about a bit of music they put together, trying to find the perfect beat. And boom, we cut to black with the white letters saying, Sara.

Sara (played by Seazynn Gilliland) plays the song with Tegan (played by Railey Gilliland), and again, the sisters are having this incredible bonding experience, but when she is done, Tegan says she has to meet Maya. It’s like the tables have turned slightly with the sisters. Before, it was Sara/Phoebe impacting their relationship, but now it’s Tegan/Maya. Sara is visibly upset that her sister is leaving. Tegan invites her to come with her to meet up with Maya.

Tegan shows up at the record store to meet up with Maya, and Maya is excited but also upset that Sara is there. We all know that Maya isn’t shy about expressing her feelings out loud, and while she says it’s okay that Sara is there, her body language makes Sara uncomfortable. For the rest of the hang-out, Sara feels like a massive third wheel until Phoebe appears, making this super awkward.

The conversation between Sara and Phoebe is a bit of an odd one. Sara is trying hard because she misses her and tells her that she will talk to her Mom about talking to her Mom about staying over. Fast forward to Sara lurking (Simone calls her out), which leads to her asking about helping her out with Phoebe’s Mom. Simone says she will do it, making Sara super happy.

We head to the bedroom, where the sisters sit down as Sara is about to play the song for Tegan, but then the phone rings. Phoebe says whatever her Mom said worked because she can sleep over. Tegan asked if it was weird, and she said no, they would hang out on Saturday. Phoebe has arrived, and Sara is freaking out a little. She sees the guitar and wonders what is up with it, and Tegan says they’ve been playing a lot lately.

They play a song for Phoebe, leading to a charming little moment together about how she’s never seen Sara like this. Sara says she is different now, and they both really like each other, but Phoebe says she likes boys and her too. Sara follows with she only wants her, and Phoebe kisses her.

At school the next day, Sara and Tegan throw in a tape to play a song for everyone. The group seems a bit shocked that this is actually them playing the songs because none of them knew they had that kind of talent. Next, we see a transition to black with Maya’s name in white letters.

Now we get Deja vu as we are back at the record store from Maya’s point of view when she realizes that Sara had come with Tegan. At the record store, Tegan attempted to teach Maya about Bruce Springsteen as she had no clue who he was (this made me feel old). The awkward moment between Phoebe and Sara happens, leading to Maya asking Tegan to come over to have her witness listening to Springsteen for the first time, but she can’t because Tegan promised Sara she would help her. Maya, again, is not happy with what is happening.

In her house, we see Maya listening to Springsteen on blast, while in the background, we hear tons of fighting. She breaks free from the home to call Tegan because she needs someone, and when she does, Tegan is slightly busy and scrammed to get off the phone. The following day, Maya walks up on Tegan and Sara, arguing about the better songwriter, and it makes Maya feel a little left out.

The ending

We circle back in the parking lot after school, where Tegan and Sara are about to play the music for everyone. Maya is slightly confused about what is happening and feels even more left out than she did earlier. Maya confronts Tegan about lying about her and using her as a filler friend until Sara comes back into her life. Honestly, Amanda Fix completely stole the show in this episode, as Maya has easily been one of my favorite characters on the show. It was amazing to see an episode focused on her—what an incredible episode.
