Summary
The penultimate episode maneuvers everyone into place for a big finale, bringing the plot full-circle in many ways.
This recap of The Bastard Son & the Devil Himself episode 7 contains spoilers.
The end is near, a showdown is due, and the story might end where it all began — at Wolfhagen. Aoife informs Soul at the beginning of this penultimate episode that the Fairborn Council have plenty of people and supplies there, so since Soul is totally unafraid of Marcus now, he proposes that they lure him there to take him out. Jessica worries that he isn’t powerful enough yet, but her brief flashback of Annalise decimating one of their men in the Ozanne barn in The Bastard Son & the Devil Himself episode 5 clues us into what she’s thinking. If Soul had the decimation ability, they’d be sorted.
The Bastard Son & the Devil Himself episode 7 recap
So, Jessica despatches Kieran, ostensibly on Soul’s behalf, to track down Annalise, who has just set out wandering with Ceelia, leaving Nathan to bond even further with Gabriel, who takes him to a hideout with a hidden map linking all the locations in the world with Cuts. Kieran manages to track them down, and Nathan, getting the wrong end of the stick, clubs him over the head with a giant set of bolt cutters. As he dies, he splutters a warning that Jessica wants to hurt Annalise, and then he expires, leaving Nathan distraught and throwing his guts up everywhere.
Kieran also tries to warn them — or Annalise at least — not to go to “wolf”, which using the map Nathan figures out is Wolfhagen. At around the same time, we see Jessica shapeshift into Soul and tell Annalise on the phone to meet there. As said in a previous recap, all roads must converge — even Hugo and Nicky are heading there after using the powers of one of their companions to reanimate Bjorn and get him to spill the beans about where to go next.
Meanwhile, Nathan and Gabriel debate about their next destination, since it’s only one day until the former’s Giving Day, and without his family blood he’ll die. Nathan thinks they have time to go to Wolfhagen and save Annalise before going to see Mercury, but Gabriel disagrees. It seems like they’re both heading to Mercury, but after finally sharing a kiss, Nathan pushes Gabriel through the Cut and then heads through the one that’ll transport him to Wolfhagen alone.
On their way to meet with “Soul”, Annalise and Ceelia are ambushed by some Blood Witches, giving Ceelia a good excuse to show off her cool Sub-Zero-style ice powers, but leaving Annalise alone and on the way to Wolfhagen.
At the same time, Gabriel tries to sneak into Mercury’s house, which has doors locked by riddles and runes, to steal Nathan’s family blood and make off with it. But Mercury herself (played by a delightfully sultry Róisín Murphy) catches him in the act. She warns Gabriel about the fires brewing at Wolfhagen, and when we cut there we see she’s right. Instead of finding the place stacked with Fairborn support, Soul and his team find it in complete disarray. Maeve, whose power turns out to be causing reenactments similar to the one we saw in the first episode, reveals that the call Aoife made to Soul earlier was under duress. Marcus forced her to lure Soul there. When Soul looks up, he sees the tell-tale red X painted in blood on the ceiling.
As the episode ends, Mercury manipulates Gabriel into staying with her — using the same yellow memory-loss powder that we’ve seen Gabriel use — and both Annalise and Nathan arrive at Wolfhagen. The latter is grabbed outside by Hugo and Nicky. The former makes her way inside to a very confused Soul, who doesn’t understand why she’s there. Jessica smiles behind her as a wolf howls in the distance.
