The Devil’s Hour season 1, episode 6 recap – how is Gideon linked to the murders?

“Amor Fati” opens with Gideon (Peter Capaldi) explaining his entire life story. He has the ability to relive all his previous lives, repeating the same one over and over, while remembering what happened in each. Gideon watched his father beat him and then kill him and his brother again and again. To stop the loop, Gideon killed his own father and then ran away. By repeatedly reliving his life, he was able to predict future events and stop tragedies from happening. Although he became obsessed with this need to stop all these tragic events from occurring and got lost in the journey. Episode 6 gives the audience insight into how Gideon is linked to the murders.

Ravi flicks through Gideon’s notebook and asks why he needs to write all this information down. Gideon states that he remembers most of it, but always builds upon it, finding new facts in every life. Ravi criticizes Gideon’s scruffy handwriting, and the man uses this to his advantage, proving that they have had this conversation before. There is a little joke about his handwriting on the last page. Ravi thinks this is all just mind games, but Lucy is slowly starting to be convinced.

Gideon admits that he kidnapped Jonah Taylor, to rescue him from murderous parents. That he also saved a girl called Evelyn, and she now looks after Jonah. He killed Aiden in previous lives because the 17-year-old killed a pregnant lady. He also confesses to kidnapping Connor, as an experiment. The man would grow up to be a serial rapist and he was trying to alter his mind-set with fear tactics. Gideon admits that even though he saves all these lives and stops criminals from committing awful acts, he always ends up being arrested, and it is always by Ravi.

In his last life he decided to stay alive in prison, hoping that Lucy would one day return to him, possibly because she believed his story was true. He waited 25 years and she did eventually show up. She asked for him to save her mother’s life and in this latest life he did just that. He stopped Sylvia from killing herself, but this altered things drastically. Lucy married Mike and then had Isaac for the first time. Gideon calls Isaac an anomaly, something that wasn’t supposed to be.

Meanwhile, Mike looks after Isaac at home and continues to grow weary of his odd behavior. He asks Isaac if he feels anything at all and then pours his beer on his son’s head. Isaac walks off and places his wet t-shirt on the heater to dry. This starts a fire, but Isaac doesn’t do anything about it. He just sits there, waiting for his mother to return. Mike comes in and witnesses the fire and he chooses not to do anything either, he just lets his son die in the blaze.

The Devil’s Hour season 1, episode 6 ending

Gideon says that Isaac is devoid of life and love; he has no soul or spirit. Lucy is offended by these statements and fights back, saying that Gideon has never loved or been loved himself. Gideon is then taken away. During their conversation, Gideon asked Lucy for her shoelace to use to explain the time loops. He uses the end of this shoelace to break out of his handcuffs and then escapes from prison. Unfortunately, Ravi realizes this faux pas just a little too late and only finds the beaten officers in the lift.

Lucy receives a message from Isaac, in which he says that he loves her. She returns home to find her house on fire. Mike just stands there in shock and she rushes in to find her son. Lucy doesn’t find him inside though and collapses on the floor due to the smoke. As she starts to die from inhaling the fumes, she has visions of her other lives, possibly past ones or even future ones. In these visions, she is in love with Ravi and becomes a detective. She arrests Gideon and watches as Meredith’s family home goes up in flames. It is there house on fire this time around, and the family survive, although the mother’s face is badly burnt in the process, just like in a vision that Lucy had. She talks about feeling deja vu, does this mean she remembers her old life completely or is this just a tiny glimmer of a memory?
