October saw Netflix release the 2022 thriller film The Stranger – here are 7 films like it that you must watch.

Written and directed by Thomas M. Wright, the Australian slow-burner thriller, The Stranger, landed on Netflix after being critically praised in the festival circuits. The story is based on one of Australia’s largest sting operations to catch a man who almost got away with murdering a child. The Stranger’s narrative about two men constantly lying to each other for different reasons is both chilling and thought-provoking. If you enjoy watching bleak crime dramas, here are a few titles similar to The Stranger that may also interest you.

7 films like The Stranger (2022) you must watch

The Departed (2006)

With an A-lister cast like Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, and Jack Nicholson, this film is also centered around an undercover police operation. Directed by Martin Scorsese, The Departed is a thrilling offering about two men tasked to infiltrate a dangerous Irish gang from Boston.

Catch Me If You Can (2002)

This title is a bit less bleak than others on this list, but it’s also based on a true and fascinating story. Leonardo DiCaprio plays a very skilled scam artist who’s able to pass as a pilot, a doctor, and even a lawyer. While DiCaprio’s character is running from one scam to the next, an FBI agent, played by Tom Hanks, is determined to bring the forger to justice.

My Son (2021)

My Son is a mystery thriller created by French filmmaker Christian Carion, that’s focused on a father as he’s trying to uncover what happened to his missing child. Just like The Stranger, this dark movie also features a crime where a child is a victim, but from a different perspective. It also takes an interesting look into the mind of a father willing to do whatever it takes to save his child.

The Snowtown Murders (2011)

Also based on a true crime story, The Snowtown Murders is a grim slow-burner about a series of murders that shook Australia. This grin thriller tells the story of a teenager (Lucas Pittaway) who falls in with an extremely wrong crowd led by his mom’s new boyfriend (Daniel Henshall).

Mystery Road (2013)

In this Australian crime thriller, Aaron Pedersen stars as an indigenous detective trying to solve the murder of a young girl in the Outbacks. Mystery Road premiered in the festival circuits back in 2013 to wide critical acclaim.

Rise (2014)

Allegedly based on a true story, Rise is a crime drama about a young man who finds himself wrongly accused of rape. He’s forced to survive in a high-security prison while fighting to prove his innocence.

The Brave One (2007)

Jodie Foster stars in this gripping thriller about a woman who lost the love of her life during an attack. Frustrated with the police’s incompetence, she decides to take justice into her own hands and get revenge on those who wronged her.
