We review the Apple TV Plus documentary film Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me, which does not contain spoilers.

After years in the limelight, Selena Gomez achieves unimaginable stardom. But just as she reaches a new peak, an unexpected turn pulls her into darkness. An intimate study that spans her six-year journey into a new light.

Selena Gomez has been working since she was seven years old, and her on-screen persona has always been different than how she sees herself. From a very young age, Selena has always felt like an outcast; she didn’t have many friends and was extremely close to her family.

Once she skyrocketed on the Disney Channel, fame changed her – as it would anyone in their teenage years – and she didn’t recognize herself. She became vain and self-obsessed and forgot where she came from. It’s the same old story about a child star understanding that fame isn’t what it’s cracked up to be.

After her breakup with Justin Bieber, she saw just how bad things could get for women in the media. Except now, it wasn’t the tabloids, it was social media. Meaning she had to relive moments she didn’t want to relive or read about people’s opinions of her. She was at her peak with the Bieber situation, but sometimes publicity isn’t always good. During her Revival tour, she had an emotional breakdown and many things came into play. Given the toxic media cycle, Selena’s image of herself was destroyed and her name was stripped from her.

She felt like the Selena she performed with didn’t even belong to her. So it felt like an out-of-body experience. This documentary is incredibly candid and explores stardom through the eyes of a young woman who has had trouble discovering who she truly is.

After going through many ups and downs with health scares and mental health issues, Selena continues to push forward in order to live a better life. Social media has done irreparable damage to many people who are socially dependent on instant gratifications from strangers. That love can only feed you for so long until you feel a bit empty inside.

Gomez went back to her roots and wanted to connect with people again because that is the one thing she misses the most from her childhood. This was a journey of self-love and healing for Gomez. You will be able to understand her in a different light and see that she has completely changed.

She is an emotionally open, complex individual who wants to use her platform to amplify other voices as well as her own in the discussion of mental health. People are quick to judge those who have suffered or are suffering from mental health, but it’s always important to have a safe space to have those discussions.

Trying to navigate and understand fame is nearly impossible and many do not make it out the same as they went in. Many things have changed and Gomez has experienced this firsthand. If you weren’t a fan of hers before this documentary, you sure will be after watching this.
