Taylor Sheridan’s been making a name for himself on the small screen since 1995, but he’s primarily known as an accomplished writer, producer, and director. With a multitude of television credits, Sheridan is the creator of the mega-popular Duttonverse, which includes shows like 1883, 1923, and Yellowstone, but he’s also behind well-regarded standalones like Tulsa King, and awards-worthy features like Hell or High Water and Wind River.

Sheridan is also a bona fide cowboy who grew up on a ranch in Texas. He not only trained all the actors in horse riding but also supplied over 100 horses to the production of Yellowstone. Many of his best-known and most beloved shows speak to his experiences ranching and horse training in some of America’s most stunning and untouched natural landscapes.

His work — especially his writing — is remarkably consistent and has produced many shows with cult followings that touch on similar themes while often being distinct in terms of their settings and styles. For fans of Yellowstone and its spin-offs, or some of Sheridan’s more standalone work, here are a bunch of healthy recommendations that you’ll almost certainly enjoy if you’re into his particular neo-Western vibe.

Dutton Ranch (2026)

Following Yellowstone fan-favourites Rip and Beth from Montana to Texas after the conclusion of the main series, Dutton Ranch finds the two of them trying to continue the family legacy on a new homestead, beset on all sides by a ruthless rival outfit, an uncomprosing landscape, and the perils of a dying industry.

Marshals (2026)

Yellowstone spin-off that continues the story of Kayce Dutton in the form of a CBS procedural, Marshals is a snappier, more action-oriented show that digs into Kayce’s military past and present-day struggles trying to raise Tate on East Camp following a personal tragedy. Not everyone was happy with some of its creative choices, but CBS evidently believe in it.

The Madison (2026)

Originally considered to be part of the Duttonverse before officially becoming its own standalone project, The Madison has Yellowstone‘s fondness for Montana’s natural wilderness, but instead of focusing on land disputes instead finds Michelle Pfeiffer as a grieving widow trying to process the loss of her husband (played by Kurt Russell) on the ranch he owned with his brother.

Landman (2024-2026)

Set in Texas and focusing on its lucrative oil industry, Landman finds Billy Bob Thornton playing an executive trying to maintain control of the region without being killed by cartels or workplace accidents. The show also involves his highly eccentric family as they attempt to make their own fortunes — or eke out some snatch of happiness — in the baking West Texas desert.

Mayor of Kingstown (2021-2025)

Sheridan created and wrote this saga of the McLusky family, power brokers in the titular prison town who attempt to keep a fragile peace between various gangs inside and outside the pentitentiary walls. Jeremy Renner leads the cast of Mayor of Kingstown in fine form, and has for four seasons of incredibly consistent quality and popularity.

Tulsa King (2022-2025)

Sylvester Stallone’s first major TV role since he became one of the biggest movie stars in history, Tulsa King tells the story of a New York mobster relocating to Tulsa, Oklahoma after a long stint in prison, reinventing himself as a capo with a misfit crew of locals. It was a big hit for Paramount+ and Sheridan, who created the show, and will spawn spin-offs of its own in the form of Frisco King, starring Samuel L. Jackson.

1923 (2022-2025)

The second of the Yellowstone prequels, this one caught up with the Dutton family in a radically changing Montana. Facing a harsh winter and the march of progress, the stewards of the Yellowstone ranch fight for what’s theirs across two all-star seasons, with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren topping the billing.

Yellowstone (2018–2024)

Set in Montana at a namesake ranch, the series follows the trials and tribulations of the Dutton family as they run their ranch near an Indian reservation. Taylor Sheridan co-created the show with John Linson, and it spawned multiple associated spin-offs. Sheridan also starred in a recurring role as smug horse trainer, Travis.

Lioness (2023-2024)

Created and written by Sheridan, Lioness follows CIA operative Joe McNamara and her team as they try to navigate their personal lives while waging the U.S.’s War on Terror. Zoe Saldana leads an all-star cast that also includes Nicole Kidman and Morgan Freeman.

1883 (2021–2022)

Created by Taylor Sheridan, this ten-episode miniseries acts as a prequel to Yellowstone. The series premiered in December 2021, and it follows the Dutton family on the arduous journey towards setting up Yellowstone Ranch. Sheridan appears as a vigilante rancher, Charlie Goodnight.

Those Who Wish Me Dead (2021)

Sheridan directed and co-wrote this crime thriller about a teenage murder witness who finds himself pursued by twin assassins in the Montana wilderness. A survival expert is tasked with protecting him against the backdrop of a forest fire. The cast includes Angelina Jolie, Nicholas Hoult, and Jon Bernthal.

Without Remorse (2021)

Sheridan contributed to the screenplay of this Tom Clancy adaptation, which found Michael B. Jordan taking on the role of John Kelly in a revenge thriller reimagined for Prime Video. Stefano Sollima, who directed the Sicario sequel, was also behind Without Remorse, which was generally received poorly but nonetheless has its fans.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018)

The sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s original handed the directorial reins over to Stefano Sollima, but Sheridan was once again responsible for the screenplay. Focusing on Josh Brolin and Benecio Del Toro’s characters from the first movie, it was largely considered a step down in overall quality, though it still received some awards nods.

Wind River (2017)

Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olson star in an award-winning thriller written and directed by Sheridan. The plot finds a wildlife officer helping a rookie FBI agent to investigate a politically and socially contentious murder on an Indian reservation in Wyoming. Time has been incredibly kind to this one, with most people discovering it later considering it to be something of a hidden gem.

Hell or High Water (2016)

When it first came out in 2016, Hell or High Water received wide critical acclaim. This award-winning neo-Western flick was written by Taylor Sheridan (who also plays a small on-screen role) and directed by David Mackenzie (Starred Up). The story is centered on two brothers (Chris Pine and Ben Foster), forced to resort to a life of crime to save their family’s ranch.

Sicario (2015)

Denis Villeneuve’s breakout thriller Sicario put Emily Blunt at the head of a DoD task force attempting to bring down a Mexican cartel. Sheridan’s brutal screenplay, which folded a personal revenge plot into the wider story, was nominated for several awards. Many people have rediscovered this movie in light of Villeneuve and Sheridan’s subsequent success, with its chilling climax becoming especially memorable.

Sons of Anarchy (2008–2014)

Sons of Anarchy was one of the most popular shows of the early 2010s, and it stars Charlie Hunnam as a man trying to balance his family life with leading a biker gang. Taylor Sheridan’s recurring appearance as Deputy Chief David Hale in the first three seasons gained him prominence and critical acclaim.

Veronica Mars (2004–2019)

Award-winning Veronica Mars was created by Rob Thomas and stars Kristen Bell as a street-smart high school student who helps solve mysteries in her affluent town under the mentorship of her detective dad. Taylor Sheridan appears as Danny Boyd in a recurring role. The series ran for three seasons in the early 2000s, with Hulu bringing it back for a 4th in 2019.
