7 shows like 1899 you must watch

Dark (2017 – 2020)

Dark is another mind-bending experience from German creators, Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar. The series centers around a set of disappearances from a seemingly quiet small town. All three seasons of this critically acclaimed show are available to stream on Netflix.

The Leftovers (2014 – 2017)

Created by Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta (and based on a novel written by the latter), this award-winning show received huge amounts of critical praise for its clever writing and strong performances by stars like Amy Brenneman, Christopher Eccleston, and Ann Dowd. The premise is as intriguing as it gets: During a mysterious global event, 2% of the world’s population disappears without a trace and the residents of a small town in Ohio are struggling to cope with the aftermath.

Fringe (2008 – 2013)

J. J. Abrams’s Fringe features everything a mystery show should: An intriguing plot, immersive mythology, and parallel worlds. The series follows the increasingly bizarre cases the FBI’s Fringe Division comes across on a day-to-day basis. Since its cancellation after five seasons, the series grew a cult following and spawned several comic books, novels, and even a video game.

The OA (2016 – 2019)

This supernatural show centers around a formerly blind woman who reemerges after having been gone for seven years with her sight returned. Sadly Netflix canceled this popular show after only two short seasons. Still, they are well worth a watch.

The Wilds (2020 – 2022)

While there is no supernatural going on in The Wilds, this show’s mysteries are still compelling. The premise features a group of girls who survive a plane crash and get stranded on a deserted island. After being rescued, they try to make sense of what really happened to them.

Altered Carbon (2018 – 2020)

Altered Carbon is based on a series of novels by British writer Richard K. Morgan, and is set in a future where consciousness can be transferred into different bodies. It follows a former soldier turned investigator tasked with solving a murder. Interestingly, the victim himself hires the investigator. Both seasons and the anime movie are available to binge on Netflix.

Manifest (2018 – )

Manifest tells a puzzling story about a plane that safely landed with all its passengers after being missing for five years. Finding themselves back in a world that moved on without them, the passengers need to adapt to their new reality while trying to figure out what happened to them while they were missing. The first part of season 4 premiered on Netflix this month, with a second part set to drop at some point in 2023.
