Is Sonic Prime for Kids? We discuss the anticipated Netflix series and the age rating it has been assigned.

Set to release in December 2022, Sonic Prime is the upcoming animated children’s streaming television series based on the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. The series is co-produced by Sega of America, Netflix Animation, WildBrain Studios, and Man of Action Entertainment (known for Ben 10) and stars many of our favorite and beloved characters (read: list of Sonic Prime Characters), including Sonic the Hedgehog, voiced by Deven Mack, Tails voiced by Ashleigh Ball, Knuckles voiced by Adam Nurada, Amy Rose voiced by Shannon Chan-Kent and Dr. Eggman voiced by Brian Drummond. There has been speculation around the character Shadow and their part in the series; all we know so far is that Shadow is in one of the trailers and will be voiced by Ian Hanlin.

Sonic the Hedgehog has been around since 1991 when the first game was released. Since then, there have been many adaptations of Sonic the Hedgehog, with there being several animated series based on the character, as well as the more recent and successful Sonic the Hedgehog films that were released in 2020 and 2022. Each one is enjoyed by adults and kids, but for the most part, I would say that most are aimed at kids.

What will Sonic Prime be about?

Across the eight episodes in season 1, we’ll watch Sonic go on an epic quest to save his friends and reality — meeting new friends and foes along the way. Sonic and Dr. Eggman both engage in a serious battle that ends in a catastrophic explosion that shatters the universe. Sonic will race through parallel dimensions to reconnect with his friends and save the world. In each parallel dimension, no one knows who Sonic is, so he’ll have to use his friendly charm to get help and defeat the council of Dr.Eggman.

Is Sonic Prime for Kids?

This is a very open-ended question. While some series can be aimed at younger audiences, adults can still enjoy them. From watching the trailer and doing some research, we believe this series is aimed at kids. The genres this series falls under are Kids’ TV, Cartoons, and Comedy. This series is for children aged seven and up; for children who can distinguish and understand the difference between make-believe and reality and can comprehend multi-verses.

The mild cartoonish violence in the game shouldn’t be too violent for children; there will be robots that shoot fireballs, fighting scenes, and Sonic in serious, intense situations, which could cause mild anxiety for the younger viewer, so parental guidance is advised. The language will be basic and inoffensive, like “loser” and “jerk.”

What age rating is Sonic Prime?

On Netflix, the guidance rating is PG, as there is some amount of threat involved, so parental guidance is advised. The PG rating does suggest that this series is aimed at kids, but this won’t stop any older audiences from watching and enjoying the series. Online forums suggest the series is aimed at audiences aged 6 to 11, as the threat and violence may be disturbing for younger audiences and then too bland for older audiences.

Is Sonic Prime Coming to Netflix?

The short and wonderful answer is yes! Sonic Prime will be available for streaming on the 15th of December, 2022. The first episode premiered on Gamefam’s Roblox game, Sonic Speed Simulator, on December 10, 2022. In this first season of Sonic Prime, there will be eight episodes. In total, Sonic Prime is rumored to have twenty-four episodes. If this is the case, we will have three seasons on the streaming platform in total. When they are due to release, we don’t know yet, but we can still be excited for season one!
