We’ve reached the big – and long! – penultimate episode of Alice in Borderland season 2, and it’s a doozy. Beginning with a largely forgotten-about Niragi swearing to make everyone suffer, it tries to live up to that promise all throughout.

The exploding blimps we’ve seen throughout the season, symbolizing heroic victory and defeat of the enemy, are once again deployed as Ann and Kuina, having strengthened their resolve in Episode 6, work their way through the games of the various face cards. Eventually, only the King of Spades and the Queen of Hearts remain.
But we have to suffer the second loss of a major character, and I’m sad to report it’s my boy Chishiya, who finally reunites with Arisu just in time to be thrust into a makeshift game of Russian Roulette with a vengeful Niragi. When Usagi eventually interrupts, Chishiya jumps in front of a bullet meant for her and loses his life in the process. It’s a tragic, if fitting, end for the show’s best character.
Right on cue, the King of Spades arrives to cause more trouble. Of course, the group also all reunites just in time for the payoff to this season-long conflict, and it very much feels like the “final boss” it’s intended to be. The King of Spades has been covered in literal and plot armor for the duration, and he isn’t going down without a fight.
Defeating the boss requires all the characters to put their heads together and utilize their various skills. But it’s a mess either way. Akane and Ann get sprayed with bullets; Kuina and Usagi get stabbed; Aguni gets shot. It’s only with a giant explosion that they’re eventually able to take him down, and even then, he isn’t quite dead. It’s Aguni who finally puts him out of his misery, finally removing his blimp from the skyline.
If we do a quick roll call, Ann is KIA, Chishiya and Akane are somehow still alive but barely, Arisu and Usagi are registered for the final game against – who else? – the Queen of Hearts, and there’s one more blimp in the sky.
