Don’t Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro Season 2 Episode 2 recap

The episode opens with Nagatoro eating candy in the art room as Senpai works. He complements her ability to toss pieces in her mouth, and she responds by telling him to open his. He refuses at first but then lets her shoot a chocolate into his mouth.

As Senpai inspects one of his pieces, the art club president, Sana Sunomiya, walks into the room. She accuses him of slacking off but understands he’s likely burnt out post-festival. She then gives him a pair of zoo tickets, encouraging him to draw things in their natural habitat and bring Nagatoro with him. Overhearing them, Nagatoro seems excited about the prospect of being asked. Despite his initial nerves, Senpai manages to invite Nagatoro under the guise of teaching her how to draw better. Although she teases him relentlessly, she still happily agrees to go with him.

When they meet that Sunday, Senpai starts by gifting Nagatoro a sketchbook which confuses her as she forgot they are there to draw. She’s far more interested in the animals and enjoying themselves, however, while he’s more intent on drawing. Senpai tries to apologize, understanding that drawing still life isn’t for everyone, but Nagatoro says she doesn’t mind and even agrees to draw with him.

She struggles at first, and after seeing Senpai’s sketch, forces him to teach her while guiding her hand by teasing him until he agrees. His hands shake, and his voice cracks, but he helps her draw the outline of a red panda before pulling back. From there, they go on to sketch several different animals before stopping to get drinks.

While comparing pictures, Nagatoro comments that hers aren’t very good. Senpai disagrees, saying she has gotten better. In return, she calls his lively, wondering what the trick is. He struggles to come up with an answer, as all he can remember is Sunomiya telling him love is the most important part of art.

Nagatoro slips away to the bathroom, leaving Senpai alone in the zoo cafe. As he waits, a couple walks in, with the male recognizing him. Senpai can’t recall how they met, but he knows they both know Nagatoro. The couple grabs the sketchbooks, poking fun at the idea of drawing at the zoo while also making fun of Nagatoro’s sketches. The longer they continue, the more angry Senpai grows until he suddenly stands from the table. He yells at them for laughing at art someone worked hard on, causing the other male to challenge him. Just then, Nagatoro returns, clearly making the couple nervous as she explains that they were making fun of her drawings. They attempt to awkwardly backtrack their insults before Nagatoro menacingly asks what they needed from her Senpai in the first place. They all but trip over themselves, complementing him in fear before running out.

Ending Explained

Senpai thanks Nagatoro for helping but seems upset about not doing better when she jokingly teases him for being a wimp. As the audience, we see that Nagatoro actually saw Senpai defending her art earlier and was clearly touched, but instead of saying so, she teases that wimp is a good look for him.

With the day starting to get late, Senpai suggests they draw one more animal before going home and says Nagatoro should pick her favorite one. She chooses the sloth, saying anything is fine before the two begin their sketches. Senpai wonders why Nagatoro is drawing from so far away, but when they share pictures, he sees she was drawing him instead. She jokes that he is like a sloth, and he is upset at first. However, the longer he looks at the sketch, the more he realizes how carefully it was drawn. He remembers Sunomiya’s words about love being the most important aspect of art again before shaking his head in denial. The episode ends with Nagatoro teasing him for staring at her drawing for so long.

This episode was just as entertaining, if not more than the last. Don’t Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro seems to have found the perfect formula, with every episode making me laugh while also tugging at my heartstrings as we see the growth between these two characters. I’m always happy to see Senpai stand up for himself or Nagatoro and just watch him become more confident in general. This series has proven to be one-to-one to watch, with consistently good showings.
