We discuss 10 TV Shows like Vikings you must watch. Keep this list handy as we provide recommendations for your watch list.

Who doesn’t love ancient stories? Vikings have always been a favorite among audiences, and it’s quite obvious why they are drawn to them. It feels like an entirely different world to get lost in. And for those historians who love to dive into the lore of the gods, it’s always a nice mixture.

There have been multiple series with Vikings, and it almost feels like its own franchise at this point. Whether it’s on the History channel, Netflix, or even produced through video games, the lore of the Vikings is always in demand.

The series on this list all have explored the histories of the Vikings and other gods among men that have made an impact throughout history.

10 TV Shows like Vikings you must watch

Vikings Valhalla (2022)

Follow-up series to Vikings set 100 years afterward and centering on the adventures of Leif Erikson, Freydis, Harald Hardrada, and the Norman King William the Conquerer. This is probably one of the most up-to-date versions of the Vikings saga that is just so good and really captures the essence of the world.

Barbarians (2020)

Torn between the mighty empire that raised him and his own tribal people, a Roman officer’s conflicted allegiances lead to an epic historical clash. There are many different stories that can be told from that time period, and this is one of the strongest ones. It’s the clashing of ideals that will always keep anyone interested.

The Last Kingdom (2015)

As Alfred the Great defends his kingdom from Norse invaders, Uhtred — born a Saxon but raised by Vikings — seeks to claim his ancestral birthright. Ancestral birthrights always made for an engaging story because of the betrayal that goes on among the families.

Knightfall (2017)

A look at the final days of the Knights Templar during the 14th century. The Knights Templar is one of the largest groups of people that even a video game was made about them. These stories have so much to unpack, and it feels different because it takes place during the 14th century.

Black Sails (2014)

Follows Captain Flint and his pirates twenty years prior to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel “Treasure Island.” Films and shows about pirates are severely under-appreciated because it feels like there is such a fun element that comes with those characters. It’s fun to explore different islands looking for treasure, and Black Sails does it best.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand (2009)

The life of Spartacus, the gladiator who led a rebellion against the Romans. From his time as an ally of the Romans to his betrayal and becoming a gladiator to the rebellion he leads and its ultimate outcome. Heading back to Gladiator times is another grand feature because of the way they were governed at the time. Spartacus is a massive character, and this series shows how important he is.

The Spanish Princess (2019)

Spanish princess Catherine of Aragon navigates the royal lineage of England with an eye on the throne. This one had to be on the list because having a woman at the forefront of a historical narrative is also important. It was not only men who hungered for power and the throne, women did too.

Marco Polo (2014)

In a world replete with greed, betrayal, sexual intrigue, and rivalry, the series is based on the famed explorer’s adventures in Kublai Khan’s court in 13th-century Mongolia. It’s an exciting adventure series highlighting true explorations from the 13th century, which is hard to even think about in this day and age.

Rise of Empires: Ottoman (2020)

Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II wages an epic campaign to take the Byzantine capital of Constantinople and shapes the course of history for centuries. The Ottoman Empire lasted for decades and to see the battle between them and their enemies is wild.

Game of Thrones (2011)

Nine noble families fight for control over the lands of Westeros while an ancient enemy returns after being dormant for millennia. It’s hard not to have Game of Thrones on this list because of how well they executed epic battles and betrayals are in this series. It may be part of the fantasy genre and not so much historical fact, but it takes the best of both to make one of the best series of all time.
