10 TV Shows like Mayor of Kingstown you must watch
Yellowstone (2018 – present)
Taylor Sheridan’s first taste of TV success came with this neo-western that debuted on the Paramount Network. This mega-hit has spawned countless spin-off shows (including 1883 and 1923) and helped cement the creator as one of the key players in the current TV landscape. The show itself stars Kevin Costner as the owner of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. He spends most of his time fighting off those that want to take his ranch’s land. A delicious western soap opera that seems unbeatable as it enters the second half of its fifth season.
The Wire (2002 – 2008)
The cornerstone of the TV crime genre, HBO’s The Wire is seen as the gold standard for this urban, authentic style of crime series. Created by David Simon, this critically acclaimed show ran for five seasons, making stars out of its killer cast, which included: Dominic West, Idris Elba, Michael K. Williams, and Isiah Whitlock Jr. Each season introduced a new section of Baltimore, Maryland, starting with the illegal drug trade, then moving into the port system, government, education and finally the print news media. This is the kind of show that most likely inspired Mayor of Kingstown.
The Night Of (2016)
Another hit HBO crime series, The Night Of is one of those limited series that perfectly tells its story in one standalone batch of installments without the need for any additional seasons. Created by Richard Price and Steven Zaillian, this eight-part drama explores the justice system, focusing on Naz (Riz Ahmed), a student who is accused of murdering a woman in New York City. John Turturro plays Naz’s unorthodox lawyer. Just like Mayor of Kingstown, this show addresses the brutality of prison life and the justice system in modern America. This is a top-tier production that will pull on your heartstrings and grip you from the off.
The Sopranos (1999 – 2007)
Beckoning in the new age of TV drama, The Sopranos is regularly called the greatest TV show of all time. Taylor Sheridan’s work will have been hugely inspired by this series as well, as both look at the grim criminal world, whilst applying large amounts of emotion and heart to bring empathy to these despicable characters. David Chase’s award-winning series follows Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini), an Italian-American mobster, who happens to attend therapy sessions, whilst going about his ruthless business. Available on Sky Go and Now TV in the UK, and HBO Max in the US.
Tulsa King (2022 – present)
Mike McLusky (Jeremy Renner) is the Mayor of Kingstown and Dwight Manfredi (Sylvester Stallone) is the Tulsa King. Both of these individuals rule the roost in their respective settings, both have served their time in prison and both are trying to bring about change. Taylor Sheridan’s other crime drama series allows Stallone a chance to shine, whilst co-starring Garrett Hedlund and Martin Starr. Another series for Paramount+, this one was is co-written by Terence Winter (The Wolf of Wall Street).
Ozark (2017 – 2022)
It seems crime is a family business these days, with the upper-class Byrde family rather excelling in the field. Netflix’s attempts at emulating Breaking Bad produced a tense and enthralling crime saga that lasted for four stellar seasons. The finale wasn’t the most satisfying of conclusions, but this show really held its own over those five years, creating some of the best drama on the streaming platform. Jason Bateman and Laura Linney gave us all a masterclass in acting, whilst the unique look of the series made it stand out immediately. Mayor of Kingstown goes for a dark, gritty aesthetic, whilst Ozark is a unique shade of mysterious blue throughout.
Jeremy Renner may be most famous for playing the Avenger Hawkeye, even garnering his own Christmas-themed spin-off series. This light, lovable Disney+ series gives Renner a chance to play the leading man in a Marvel narrative, yet Hailee Steinfeld nearly goes and steals the show from under him. Renner has a gift for playing iconic and wholesome characters with apparent ease, a skill he utilizes in Mayor of Kingstown as well. This six-part superhero series makes for a great, easy binge-watch, especially around the holiday season.
Black Bird (2022)
More gritty crime drama set inside a prison. Apple TV+’s Black Bird showcased some exceptional acting during its first and only season. The miniseries tells the story of drug dealer Jimmy (Taron Egerton), who is offered the chance to get out of jail (for free) if he can convince a serial killer (played by Paul Walter Hauser) to confess to the murders he’s committed and then divulge the locations of his buried victims. It’s a tantalizing premise that is milked for the most tension possible. A grueling and gruesome prison drama that uses a similar palette to that of Mayor of Kingstown.
1923 (2022 – present)
If you want to see more exceptional TV from Taylor Sheridan, then look no further than Yellowstone spin-off series 1923. Starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, this classic western setup explores the Dutton family back in 1923, during the Prohibition and Great Depression. The series is just as grim and unrelenting as Taylor Sheridan’s other TV shows, with plenty of hardships for the Dutton family to endure. This brutal prequel series has been renewed for a second season over on Paramount+.
Sons of Anarchy (2008 – 2014)
Long before Taylor Sheridan’s film and TV career really kicked into gear with regard to the writing and directing aspect, the real-life cowboy was an actor. He starred in 21 episodes of Sons of Anarchy, playing David Hale. The FX series followed a motorbike gang in Charming, California. Just like Mayor of Kingstown, the series explored themes of government corruption and injustice. The show ran for seven seasons, totaling close to 100 episodes. It made a star out of its lead Charlie Hunnam and was the highest-rated show for FX at its peak. A definite one for Sheridan aficionados to check out.

With what happen to Jermey Renner If this isn’t part of the series. I would like to pass on an idea. The actor who played Mitch (Kyle Chandler) Recast him in going back to prior of season 1 an create a season 3 showing how the family became the “mayors” touch on their father in how he was killed an Mitch’s character taking the role that Jermey Renner is. Given the fact that Renner is prob still recovering from his accident. This could provide time as well as amazing feature towards the series. With who shot Mitch an his connection to the group he was a part of in the prison along side hector. Maybe second in command of the group he represented. Thanks in advance. Hope Sheridan An actor playing Ian sorry for name. Can come up with more seasons. Best show on any streaming or tv service !
