Summary

This exciting episode perfectly sets up what are sure to be some serious battles without sacrificing any of the action or enjoyment.

We recap the HiDive anime series Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Season 4 Episode 17, “White Palace: White Labyrinth,” which contains spoilers.

Things are looking up a bit after Welf’s (voiced by Yoshimasa Hosoya) success crafting new magic swords last week. Even Bell (Yoshitsugu Matsuoka) and Ryuu (Saori Hayami) got a moment to breathe before setting off to navigate the lower floors of the dungeon. If there’s one thing viewers have realized this season, however, it is that things never remain quiet for long in this series. It’s only a matter of time before our heroes encounter a new foe, but hopefully, they find one another before then.

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Season 4 Episode 17 Recap

The episode opens with another flashback to Ryuu’s time in the Astrea Familia. She argues with Kaguya over the lives of the many versus the lives of the few before Kaguya insults her for being the weakest member of the familiar.

Bell and Ryuu are attacked on the lower floors by large werewolf-like monsters called Loup Garous. When it seems like they will be outnumbered and overrun, Ryuu tosses a blazerock she took from a dwarf. Bell launches a Firebolt attack at the rock, igniting it and buying them more time. She tells them they have five rocks at their disposal.

Bell’s breakdown

As Bell watches Ryuu map out their next route, he laments that it is always her taking care of him despite how hard he tries to help her. As she warns Bell that he is using too much energy in battle, an overwhelming sense of dread seems to loom over him as Bell begins to feel like he cannot keep going. With the monsters only getting stronger, he realizes something has to give, or they will not succeed.

Bell apologizes for not being stronger, but Ryuu assures Bell that he is doing fine. If anything, he is handling himself with more grace and composure than most adventurers who would’ve been making demands by now. With more confidence, she assure him that he can be stronger and tells him how to better approach their next battle.

Bell’s party continues their descent through the middle floors, with Welf’s indestructible magic sword taking out enemies. The group comments on how powerful and unique it is.

Irregularities in the Dungeon

Elsewhere in the tunnel, the Hephaistos battles numerous monsters. They notice that the dungeon is not only louder than usual but that they can sense the presence of a very strong monster somewhere as well.

Meanwhile, Bell’s party comes across a number of bodies left behind in the Juggarnaut’s wake and asks Bors to take him to where he saw Bell fight this monster.

Ryuu and Bell explore the lower floors

As they search for the tunnel to the 36th floor, Ryuu warns Bell to look out for two types of monsters: the Peluda, with poisonous quills, and the Spartoi, skilled in hand-to-hand combat. A little deeper into their walk, they encounter a blue Ooze, which she says is drinkable, before preparing some for her and Bell.

Ryuu explains the various rings she uses to navigate the lower floors, saying there are 5 in total as they come across the third ring, which is stark white in color. Now that they know where they are, it will be easier to figure out how to find their way to the outer exit.

Does Bell’s Party figure out where he is?

Bors leads the party to where Bell fought the Juggarnaut. There, Lili discovers a large hole she suspects Bell could’ve fallen down, meaning he is trapped on an even lower floor than they thought. However, they cannot say for sure, so they decide to continue into the tunnel, only for a Voltimeria monster to appear. When the group tries to escape, even more Voltimeria appear, blocking their exit.

As the Hephaistos familial heads deeper, they begin to hear the voices of Bell’s party engaged in battle.

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Season 4 Episode 17 Ending Explained

The more Voltimeria Bell’s party defeats, the more appear. With each new monster, the group grows closer to their limit. Their situation only gets worse when another hoard of monsters comes charging toward them from one of the tunnels. When everything looks hopeless, the Xenos swoop in, taking on the monsters and saving Bell’s party.

On the lower floors, Ryuu mentally prepares herself for an outcome where they both do not survive, already prepared to sacrifice herself if necessary.

Not only was this episode exciting and suspenseful from the beginning, it delivered on something I’m sure plenty of fans have been waiting for all season: the Xenos. Although it’s been a series of unfortunate events for Bell and his friends every week, the episodes do a good job of breaking up the fights and trauma with lighthearted moments of triumph as well. It keeps the tone from feeling too dark, especially when the show’s first three seasons weren’t that way.
