We recap the HBO series The Last of Us Season 1 Episode 5, “Endure and Survive,” which contains spoilers.
In The Last of Us Season 1 Episode 4, we saw Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) hit the road on their way to try to meet up with Tommy. However, their trip is derailed as the highway is blocked up, forcing them to post up in a city with a militia group looking for trouble. After a battle, Joel and Ellie find some safety, or so we think, as Joel wakes up to Ellie screaming that someone is pointing a gun at her head. What’s the aftermath of that? Let’s dive in.
The Last of Us Season 1 Episode 5 recap
The episode starts with a rowdy crowd celebrating what seems like a victory. Then we transition to a bunch of folks beating people down and announcing that they will give them a fair trial if they come out now. Next, we see Henry and Sam together, watching someone dragged by a car across town as these announcements happen. Finally, Henry tells Sam to pay attention to him and not the ruckus that’s going on in the background.
Kathleen is questioning the group about whether or not they enjoyed being sellouts. She tells them that not all of them have to die, but says she wants to know where Henry is. As Kathleen goes to walk out, she tells her bodyguard to kill them, but someone speaks up and tells her Henry is with Eldestein. So she walks outside and tells Perry (her number one guy) that she wants them out on the hunt for Henry ASAP. He asks her if they are putting the group on trial but says no, and Kathleen tells him to burn the bodies after he is done (killing them) because it’s faster. Man, she is ruthless.
Next, we see Edelstein head to where Henry and Sam are, bringing them food and supplies. With all the supplies, they realize they have 11 days’ worth of food, which gives them that long to plan their next move. However, on day ten, we see that Edelstein hasn’t returned, and the hunger is taking a toll on Sam. Now, we see the moment in the last episode where Joel and Ellie’s truck crashes and they start battling with the militia.
And now, we are at the standoff between Henry and Sam with Joel and Ellie, who promises to lower his guns as long as they help each other. Joel’s tone of voice comes into question in Henry’s attempt to trust him. Ellie funnily says it was just his tone of voice and tells Joel to relax. Finally, after they agree, they all sit around eating a couple of snacks. The following morning, Henry talks to Joel about helping him get out of the city. Henry shows the way, and Joel clears the way.
Who are Henry and Sam?
Henry and Sam are brothers from Connecticut. The brothers are on the run from Kathleen and her crew because Kathleen is on the hunt for him because she thinks Henry sold out her brother to FEDRA, leading to his death.
Are Henry and Sam in The Last of Us Video Game?
Yes, Henry and Sam are in the game. The duo are survivors of the Hartford QZ due to the military starting to force their presence in the city. So they and the groups decided to head to Pittsburgh to look for supplies. However, in the city, everyone in the group but Henry and Sam are captured. Shortly after meeting Joel and Ellie, they team up to escape the city. (In the game, it is Pittsburgh, but the show changed the city to Kansas City.)
The Last of Us Season 1 Episode 5 Ending Explained
Just as the four of them are on the verge of getting to where they need to go, a man starts shooting at them. Like he always does, Joel turns into protective mode and heads up to take down the shooter. Upon getting up there, he pleads with the man to put his gun down, and he won’t shoot, but he doesn’t listen, forcing Joel to take his life. Shortly after, he hears the walkie-talkie saying keep them close. We are on the way.
Kathleen and her team have arrived and want Henry to come out. Henry pleads that he will come out but has to let the kids out, but she doesn’t care what he wants. Henry looks at Ellie and tells her to take Sam and run. As Kathleen is about to shoot Henry, we see the truck that blew up fall into the ground, leading to a load of the Infected coming out to attack Kathleen’s squad.
Joel is still at the top of the house with a sniper rifle, protecting Ellie at every turn, and who would’ve ever thought that a man shooting zombies could be so emotional? As Ellie helps Henry and Sam, Kathleen stops them, but she gets jumped by an Infected. After the battle, Henry and Joel chat, and Joel invites him and Sam on their trek to Wyoming. While Sam and Ellie are on the bed, she realizes that Sam has been knicked up by one of the Infected, and she tries to use her blood to heal him.
The following morning, Sam attacks Ellie, and Henry and Joel battle over the gun. One of the most emotional moments in the game comes to fruition when Henry shoots Sam in the head, killing him. Uncertain of what he just did, Henry turns the gun to himself and pulls the trigger. Playing the game was emotional, but watching it play out had me in tears. I am at a loss for words.
