Summary

This film has a strong female friendship and shows all the obstacles these women face together, even when a man gets in the way.

We review the 2023 Netflix film A Sunday Affair, which does not contain spoilers.

What starts as a film about healthy female friendships turns into a deceit-filled story all because of one man named Sunday (Oris Erhuero). Men can be greedy when they don’t know what they want, and this character is a prime example of what not to do.

This film has such a powerful female friendship between Toyin (Dakore Akande) and Uche (Nse Ikpe-Etim) that they carry the movie because of how much light and love are shared between them. It only takes one man and a secret to cause chaos in anyone’s life, and co-writers Darrel Bristow-Bovey, and Nnegest Likké write a compelling story with these women.

A Sunday Affair Review and Plot Summary

The film is about two best friends, Uche and Toyin, who end up falling in love with the same man (Sunday). He is a very charming yet flawed eligible bachelor. A love triangle ensues with the women unaware that they are dating the same man, as per the synopsis on IMDB.

At first, Uche is the one to encounter Sunday, but he believes that she isn’t the type to be in a romantic relationship with and that she should just be someone on the side. On top of that, he’s already married and ends up meeting Toyin on the train after the day he spent with Uche. So now Sunday is married and going after two women. The two best friends (since childhood) are beaming with their new relationship, but they avoid telling each other who the man is, so they don’t jinx it.

The story becomes more intricate as it goes on because of the decisions made by Sunday and what ends up happening in women’s lives. The women band together but have to keep lying to each other as they become closer to Sunday on their terms.

Is the 2023 movie A Sunday Affair any good?

The story is engaging because of how certain events are placed throughout the film. The good thing is that the audience knows everything happening between them, and the viewer almost feels like they’re a part of the scandal. That keeps you engaged until the end because you don’t know who Sunday will end up with.

However, the performances weren’t that strong, and the couples didn’t have much chemistry. It sometimes felt like a soap opera, but the story holds everything together.

The way the women are there for each other is more powerful and sweet than their separate relationships with Sunday. It’s interesting to see how the dynamic constantly changes with new information thrown into the mix. It is a bit slow sometimes, but the characters end up in odd situations to keep you interested. The ending is heartbreaking, but it shows how much love women can have for each other and how that’s more important than any man in your life.
