Summary
While it feels like a lot was crammed into this episode, it does offer satisfying answers to some of the show’s biggest questions.
In Episode 6, Buddy Daddies focused on Miri (voiced by Hina Kino) as her class went on a field trip to the zoo. Although she got lost and ran into some shaft characters, everything worked out in the end. Of course, Kazuki (voiced by Toshiyuki Toyonaga) and Rei (voiced by Koki Uchiyama) weren’t far behind either. While it was a fun episode, viewers can’t help but wonder who the mysterious lady who showed up and the end was and how she’s connected to Kazuki and Rei.
The episode opens with Karin asking Kyutaro where Kazuki is. It then shifts to Kazuki picking Miri up from school on a rainy day. She drops her umbrella, and Kazuki grabs her before she can chase after it. When it’s hit by a car, he has a flashback to another umbrella being destroyed in an accident and comments that this is his least favorite time of the year.
Kazuki
After doing most of the housework himself, Kazuki tells Rei he could help out more when it comes to Miri. Rei tells him that he is doing his best.
Later at dinner, as Rei and Miri complain about the food they don’t like, Kazuki grabs their plates, telling them they do not have to eat. This only causes them to whine more, requesting french toast for dinner. Finally, Kazuki storms off angrily, asking if they think he is just there to be their maid.
The next day, Kazuki leaves a note saying he will be out. With Rei and Miri home alone, he is forced to step up and make them breakfast. As they enjoy cereal, Miri wonders if she is going to daycare, causing Rei to realize it is almost noon. He gets her dressed and packs her bag before taking her to daycare on his bike.
To get Rei and Miri to help and appreciate him more, Kazuki goes to hide out at Kyutaro’s cafe. He complains about everything he does, while Kyutaro says he enjoys himself.
While talking with Kazuki, Kyutaro tells him that his sister-in-law, Karin, has once again returned the money he sent. Kyutaro says that since Karin is Yuzuko’s only family, Kazuki should talk to her in person, but Kazuki chooses to leave instead.
After spending his day getting drunk with several women, Kazuki fights with several men on the street. As he comes to, Karin stumbles onto him, asking if he is okay. After telling him how stupid he looks, she says that Kyutaro has told her everything, and they need to talk. He tries to walk away, but she yells that he cannot keep sending her money and avoiding her.
Karin tells Kazuki that she cannot accept his money, so he promises to stop sending it. She doesn’t understand why he sends it, saying, “It’s not like it’s your fault my sister died, right?” Kazuki responds that it is his fault, as he killed her.
Kazuki chases a man down a dark alley on a job, but the man escapes into a stolen car. While driving away, the car swerves into a gas truck, causing an explosion. At the same time, Yuzuko is crossing the nearby street and ends up getting caught in the blast before Kazuki can warn her.
Miri catches a cold
Rei wakes up the next day to find Miri has a fever, but Kazuki still has not come home. He tries searching for medicine but finds none for children and takes her to the hospital instead. When he realizes he doesn’t know where the hospital is, he takes her to Kyutaro’s cafe.
While visiting Yuzuko’s grave, Kazuki thinks back on the first time he met her. Karin walks up and tells Kazuki that it’s been long enough, but he says it has been too long for him to change. She encourages him to try living his own life to make her sister happy before asking about the child he took in, telling him that she knows he’ll be able to make her happy. Kazuki says that he will at least try.
Kazuki returns home to see that the house is a mess before finding Miri and Rei asleep in her room. The following day, they attempt to make Kazuki breakfast and gift Miri an umbrella to replace the one she lost.
A lot happened in this episode, with viewers being hit with a lot of information. It was nice to tie up many lingering questions, but after all the build-up, I think it would’ve worked better if they hadn’t chosen to dump all of the answers in one episode in the middle of the season. Now that we’ve gotten Kazuki’s backstory, it will be interesting to see if it continues to influence him and remain a significant part of his character or if we’ll move on from that storyline entirely now, especially with so many episodes left.
