Summary

This was one of the slower episodes of the season, with a lot of information to take in. However, learning more about Fyodor’s plan was worth the slower pace and making some headway in proving the Agency’s innocence.

Bungo Stray Dogs Season 4 Episode 8 opens with Chuya using his gravity manipulation gift to rain bullets on Saigiku and Tetcho before evacuating the Armed Detective Agency. Kunikida cannot believe the Port Mafia saved them, but Chuya tells them he’s only there because their bosses made a deal.

In exchange for saving his friends, Yukichi agreed to transfer one of the Agency’s members to the Port Mafia.

Suddenly, Tetcho’s sword bursts through the helicopter, stabbing Miyazawa in the chest. As Tetcho uses the sword to propel himself toward them, Kunikida jumps outside the aircraft. He launches himself toward Tetcho, sending them both hurling to the ground. In mid-air, he then uses his ability by turning a corner page of his notebook into a grenade, blowing them both up.

Two days later

Kyoka and Atsushi fall through the ceiling of the building they’ve been hiding. Atsushi wonders if what he overheard the inspectors saying about the president being arrested was true. As they make their way to safety, they overhear news broadcasts accusing the Armed Detective Agency of being a criminal organization all along. He starts to despair, wondering how they’ll get out of this, before remembering the warning Ranpo had received from Mushitaro. They set out to find him to prove the Agency’s innocence.

To find Mushitaro, Kyoka, and Atsushi, seek out Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald to use his Eyes of God I.D. system. However, when they arrive, Francis is already engaged in battle with the assassin, Nathaniel Hawthorne, who jumps from the window.

What does Mori tell the Armed Detective Agency about Dazai?

After agreeing to let them use one of his hideouts, Mori visits the Armed Detective Agency. Although he does not know Kunikida’s status, he does know that Dazai was transferred to the Department of Security only for his whereabouts to be unknown now.

What does Francis tell Atsushi about Fyodor?

Despite pleading with the Armed Detective Agency’s innocence to Francis, he tells them that beating Fyodor is impossible regardless. He says that Fyodor is imprisoned at Meursault, a special prison for the Gifted. Atsushi does not understand how Fyodor can manipulate what happens on the outside so well, but Francis says that is his specialty.

Who is the newest prisoner at Meursault?

A new cell appears when Fyodor thinks his scheme is going as planned. He grins, seeing the prisoner is Dazai and realizing the man let himself be captured to help the Armed Detective Agency. Claiming their intelligence is too much for others, the two decide to play a game where they ask one another questions and give advice.

Before long, the question of how they both communicate with the outside world arises, and they realize that whoever can figure out the other’s method first will be able to have their friends terminate it from the outside. Cutting off communication is essentially the key to victory.

Francis asks to have Yosano use her gift to bring former guild member Margaret Mitchell out of her coma, as she is the only person capable of killing Nathaniel. Although Atsushi is hesitant to do so, after seeing Magaret’s body, he reluctantly agrees.

How does Bungo Stray Dogs Season 4 Episode 8 end?

After saying he will not help them prove their innocence, Yosano attacks Mori and accuses him of only helping because he wants her in the Port Mafia. She tells him that Yukichi would never allow that. Although viewers see in a flashback that Yukichi asked Mori not to request Yosano specifically, Mori lies and tells her that Yukichi would be willing to transfer her.

Suddenly, Francis calls Mori, telling him he’s sent Atsushi his way so they can use Yosano’s ability. Not only is Mori surprised by the fact that Francis found the hideout, he knows Francis tends to align himself with the stronger side. He concludes that this could be a trap if Francis is working with the Armed Detective Agency over the Hunting Dogs.

Although there was much talking and information dumping in this episode, it wasn’t necessarily bad. Not only did we learn a lot about what was happening, but we also got to see several familiar characters.

Knowing how much of a nuisance people like Francis have been in the past, reaching out to him for help was a surprising choice that made things much more enjoyable. It was also lovely finally seeing what part Dazai would play in this.

He’d taken a bit of a backseat this season, and as many fans’ favorite characters and one of the most exciting and valuable, I was honestly surprised it had taken this long.

Still, I’m excited to see where all of this is going. Every time I think I know what’s about to happen, I’m wrong, but the fact that the series still keeps viewers on their toes this deep into the season is commendable.
