Things took a serious left turn in Bungo Stray Dogs Season 4 Episode 6 as the Armed Detective Agency found themselves on the wrong side of the law. Despite knowing something bad would happen and trying to prevent it, it’s clear Ranpo could’ve never predicted just how awful things would turn out. With his friends about to be framed, or even killed, for heinous crimes they did not commit, Ranpo only has so much time to figure out a solution. However, it’s clear now that no one knows exactly what Fyodor and the Decay of Angels have planned.

Bongu Stray Dogs season 4, episode 7 recap

The episode opens with Ranpo in front of Taneda’s body. Suddenly a security camera appears in the room, and Ranpo deduces that whoever is watching them has the power to manipulate reality using the ability of “The Book” that Taneda spoke of earlier. Within seconds a bloody knife appears in his hand, and the police appear outside the building.

Why is The Reality Atering Book so dangerous?

While being shot at by snipers, Tanizaki uses his illusion ability to conceal them long enough to hide in another room with Miyazawa. Tanizaki suggests surrendering since they are innocent, but Ranpo tells them it would be useless. He explains that someone is using a page from this book to alter reality. Still, unlike the abilities of people like Mushitaro, the book also alters the memories of everyone involved.

How does the Armed Detective Agency escape the police?

When the police try to take them out with poisoned gas, the Armed Detective Agency all take their lives, knowing Yosano will activate her ability “Thou Shalt Not Die” to resuscitate them. After the police enter the room, she brings them all back from the brink of death, and the group takes out the police. They then steal the riot gear and use it to sneak out.

Who are the Hunting Dogs?

A mysterious pod crashes in front of the police tents, prompting them to go outside and defend themselves from who they think are more members of the Armed Detective Agency. Inside, however, is Fukuchi Ochi, captain of the Hunting Dogs, a special unit in the military police.

There to greet him is, Saigiku Jono, the same Hunting Dog that previously arrested Dazai. The next two members, Tetcho Suehiro and Teruko Okura, quickly drop in from the sky as well. There is a mysterious fifth member of the group, but as he’s busy infiltrating another organization, no one seems to know who he is.

The train or the roads?

Trapped in the forest, the Armed Detective Agency realizes their two best options are escaping either by train or car. Kunikida decides car would be the better route to minimize casualties. Meanwhile, the Hunting Dogs decide that they are going to split up. Tetcho and Saigiku take the roads, while Fukuchi and Teruko take the trains.

The Armed Detective Agency attempts to escape

Kunikida and the others steal a car, but their escape is almost thwarted when Saigiku suddenly appears in the back seat. Tanizaki and Miyazawa manage to pull him out of the car, only to wind up at the mercy of Tetcho’s blade. Just before he can kill them, Kunikida hits Tetcho with the car to save them.

At the same time, Kyoka sneaks off to save Atsushi, whose leg has been stuck in cement underground this entire time. She explains the seriousness of their situation to him as they escape to meet back up with the rest of the group.

The ending

Once recovered from being hit, Tetcho activates his ability, Plum Blossoms in Snow, to slice the Armed Detective Agency’s car clean in half, causing them to crash. Tetcho and Saigiku approach, with Tetcho attacking several members. Although his is injured in the process, Kunikida, is finally able to see what Tetcho’s ability is actually capable of, as his sword extends and turns at will.

Saigiku orders Tetcho to kill Yosano first so she cannot revive them. Kunikida attempts to surrender to save her life. Just before Tetcho’s blade can hit her, however, Tetcho is shot by a sudden bullet. As they attempt to figure out where it came from, Chuya Nakahara arrives in a helicopter, telling the group he is there to save them on his boss’s orders.

This was easily one of the most exciting and suspenseful episodes of the season so far. As the Agency digs itself deeper into trouble, we’re starting to see the puzzle pieces sort of fit themselves together. Seeing how each week connects pieces from the episodes before them makes this mystery not only feel cohesive but exhilarating to watch unfold. At times it can feel a little overwhelming to keep up with all the side characters, but the outrageous outfits and designs help. The powers and abilities also make them easier to recognize, while making the mystery and fights that much more unpredictable. The way this series uses them feels more clever than just seeing powers in a superhero-based society, without sacrificing any of the action.
