Summary

Monique Olivier: Accessory to Evil is a compelling documentary series that uncovers the true nature of a serial murderer’s wife. Appearing submissive, Monique Olivier’s involvement in her husband’s crimes is greater than what she claims.

We review the Netflix true crime series Monique Olivier: Accessory to Evil.

Monique Olivier: Accessory to Evil is a Netflix original true crime documentary series. Released on March 2, 2023, the limited series follows Michel Fourniret, France’s most infamous serial killer. Throughout his murders from 1987 to 2003, it was unclear for a long time whether his wife, Monique Olivier, was a pawn or a participant.

The series is directed by Christophe Astruc and Michelle Fines. It features interviews with police chiefs, Monique Olivier’s lawyer, and family members of the victims.

Monique Olivier: Accessory to Evil Review

Monique Olivier: Accessory to Evil details the heinous crimes committed by the Fourniret family, including the abductions, assaults, and murders of young French and Belgian girls. It grips viewers from the start with a recording of a victim’s interview, where she explains her kidnapping and her belief that she would die.

Michel Fourniret’s wife, Monique Olivier, presented herself as a submissive wife scared of her husband. However, investigators and families of the victims stated that Olivier gave him the license to kill.

To investigators, the idea that Olivier had assisted her husband but never killed anyone was fundamental. However, the series slowly uncovers Olivier’s heavy involvement in the disappearance and death of many young girls, including Isabelle Laville, Céline Saison, and Mananya Thumpong.

The series also expresses how alarming it was that many women had gone missing in the area. However, the police did not act when they should have. One family was told to leave and wait until Fourniret struck again for the police to catch him.

Interviewees unnerve viewers by conveying that if Fourniret had been imprisoned from the beginning as he should have, this would have prevented all the subsequent gruesome murders.

Is Monique Olivier: Accessory to Evil good?

Monique Olivier: Accessory to Evil is shocking and will disturb viewers with its graphic explanations of Fourniret’s desires and disturbing fantasies.

Further, the stomach-turning series emphasizes the pleasure that Olivier took in abducting, punishing, and killing young girls. Even when the victims called out to her for help, she refused to spare their lives. She and her husband became notorious sex criminals who were heavily condemned by the public and press. Olivier’s manipulative nature allowed her to commit crimes secretly under the guise of a fearful housewife.

More disturbingly, Olivier used the presence of their infant son to appeal to young girls and abduct them. The depictions of the Fourniret family’s despicable crimes were accompanied by unsettling audio and video of the couple. For example, we see footage of excavations at the castle where Fourniret buried his victims, including Elisabeth Brichet. Video clips of the trial show Olivier’s emotionless expression and lack of remorse toward the victims.

This true crime series is not for the faint of heart due to its explicit content. However, horror and true-crime fans should find the series gripping and binge-worthy.
