Summary
Although hilarious and adorable, this week’s filler definitely could’ve used some more excitement.
We recap the Crunchyroll anime series Buddy Daddies Season 1 Episode 9, “No Sweet Without Sweat,” which contains spoilers.
Things took a much darker tone at the end of Buddy Daddies Season 1 Episode 8, with Rei’s father putting out a hit on Kazuki (voiced by Toshiyuki Toyonaga) and Miri (voiced by Hina Kino). While viewers knew his family was intense, no one could’ve predicted they would try to murder Rei’s new family. Whether or not Kyutaro warns them about the upcoming attack will make all the difference in whether or not Kazuki and Rei (voiced by Koki Uchiyama) are prepared enough to defend themselves. It seems the lines between blood family and chosen family are about to blur in ways that could have devastating consequences.
Buddy Daddies Season 1 Episode 9 Recap
The episode opens with Miri, Rei, and Kazuki at the park, helping her train for her upcoming field day race. Afterward, they visit Kyutaro’s cafe for drinks. At nightfall, we see a man scoping out Miri’s daycare and later learn it is Rei when he returns home in full gear.
Kazuki, Rei, and Miri arrive at her daycare for field day. As she goes off with her class, they secure a spot to take photos and mingle with several other parents. As a daycare representative, Miri gives the field day greeting speech.

Kazuki, Rei, and the other parents watch the kids participate in various outdoor activities and events like tug of war. The group then breaks for lunch before the start of the afternoon activities. The first-afternoon event is the race, where Miri hopes to win a gold medal.
How does Miri end up falling during her race?
As Miri runs her heat, Kazuki and the other parents cheer. Rei cheers as well, growing progressively louder as he overcomes his shy demeanor. However, the sound of his voice surprises Miri, causing her to trip and fall mid-race.
Does Miri win a gold medal?
After tripping during her race, Miri falls behind and cannot make a comeback. While she gets a medal, it is not gold but a participation medal.
She does, however, win a gold medal later during the parent-child race.
Feeling like Miri’s loss was his fault; Rei chooses to sit out of the parent-child race while Kazuki partners with Miri instead. The pair compete against other students and parents in a race filled with obstacles as Rei quietly cheers them off from the sideline.
One of the last obstacles in the race is a scavenger hunt where each pair is given a card with an item to find. Miri pulls her card and seems slightly down at first before grabbing Rei as her item. After running through the finish line, Miri reveals that her scavenger hunt card said “family.”
Buddy Daddies Season 1 Episode 9 Ending Explained
Although they are weary of leaving evidence behind, Kazuki and Rei agree to take a family picture together when Miri’s teacher offers. The group then walks home together at the end of field day, commenting on the field day events and how they plan to practice for the following year.
The episode ends with Ogino reminding Kyutaro “not to forget the job” as he looks at family photos of Kazuki, Miri, and Rei.
Although today’s episode of Buddy Daddies felt like a filler, it was still cute and entertaining, as much of the series has been. I can understand why they chose to give us this moment between Kazuki, Rei, and Miri to really build up the whole family angle, but after last week’s recap episode, it would’ve been nice to see a little more action. For a show about assassins, there hasn’t been much of that incorporated into the series as you would expect.
The end of the episode did bring viewers back to the latest problem at hand, which is the hit Rei’s family took out of Kazuki and Miri. Hopefully, next week we can see some more developments with that.
