I remember seeing Superbad at the cinema and sneaking my 12-year-old brother and his friends in, not realizing what we were about to watch. This is a fun memory as we laughed from beginning to end, and I was then the cool older sister. I can’t quite believe it came out in 2007, as it is still one of the funniest teen-comedy films to date.
This coming-of-age story surrounds two best friends in high school who want to live their life to the fullest before going to different colleges. They promise a gorgeous girl at school they can get alcohol for her party. To do this, they must get a fake I.D. and fool everyone into getting beer and getting to that party. Their crazy antics get them into a lot of trouble.
What I appreciate about comedy films, especially ones that surround themes of growing up, friendship, and sex, is that they make the audience able to laugh at some of the things we feel most insecure about.
This film’s script is rude, dirty, and funny in all the right places, and it has a great cast, including Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Christopher Mintz-Platts, and Michael Cera.

21 and Over (2013)
This comedy movie surrounds Jeff, who, the night before his crucial medical school interview, decides that he and his friends should head out for drinks to celebrate his 21st birthday. Why not? He’s technically legal now. But, the night turns into one filled with overindulgence and wild antics. Similar to Superbad, what should be an easy, fun night turns into a spectacle and insane night of debauchery.
Bad Neighbours 2014)
If you’re a big Seth Rogen fan, this comedy movie is one to add to your list. Mac (Rogen) and Kelly (Rose Byrne) have a lovely life in suburbia, and a new baby is turned upside down when a fraternity house moves in next door. Constant partying means it’s a war to get a good night’s sleep, but if you can’t beat them, join them. It’s a great comedy also starring Zac Efron (who is shirtless for a lot of it), and they throw one hell of a party.
Project X (2012)
If you enjoyed Superbad for its friendship and sense of adventure, then Project X is the film you should watch after. Thomas (Thomas Mann), Costa (Oliver Cooper), and JB (Jonathan Daniel Brown) are three loser high school seniors who are determined to end their high school years on a high. How can they leave a mark and be remembered – with an epic party, of course! As in most comedies that feature an epic party, word spreads, and this party turns into an unbelievable night, leaving them legends.
The Hangover (2009)
A similar comedy film to Superbad, but then add ten to twenty years on the protagonists. In The Hangover, Doug is getting married, and he and his three best men go to Las Vegas to celebrate his bachelor party. They wake up the following day to realize that Doug is missing, and it becomes a journey to find him before he takes his vows. It’s ridiculous, over-the-top, and insanely funny. The antics these grown men get into will have you laughing out loud, like Superbad.
The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005)
This film is a comedy classic for everyone of all ages to enjoy as it centers around a 40-year-old who, once his co-workers discover he is a virgin, it becomes their mission to get him laid. While trying to lose his virginity, the lead, played by the hilarious Steve Carell, begins to fall in love with a woman he sees a future with, making his life more complicated. Themes in this include male friendships, sexuality, and relationships.
American Pie Presents: The Naked Mile (2006)
I recommend watching all the American Pie films in the series if you enjoyed Superbad. These comedy films are hilarious and last the test of time for their relatable and ridiculous content. They probably paved the way for this comedy genre and influenced many movies today. We follow Erik Stifler, the cousin of the infamous Steve Stifler, who hopes to lose his virginity at a notorious race where people run in the nude. Similar to Superbad, this is a comedy, a coming-of-age film centered a lot around sex.
Old School (2003)
Trying to relive his fun glory days, a lawyer sick of the mundane adult life and his two friends decide to set up a fraternity house next to hi s former college campus. What could go wrong? Starring Luke Wilson, Will Ferrell, and Vince Vaughan are classic comedy movie actors, so you know you’ll have a laugh watching this.
Blockers (2018)
This is similar to Superbad but with a twist, as it centers around Lisa, Mitchell, and Hunter, who are all parents who have become friends through the friendships of their children. The three band together to stop their daughters from losing their virginity on prom night. Embarrassing, overbearing, and hilarious. This film is produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and stars Leslie Mann, John Cena, and Ike Barinholtz.
Blue Mountain State (2011)
This is a dark horse comedy genre film series that I only recently discovered. In Blue Mountain State, the weekdays are the buildup for Saturday’s big game. In the first film, the star Quarterback, Thad, is faced with the pressures of becoming a professional NFL player, and he and his team must fight to save their house from getting shut down by the university president. With crazy antics, partying, and rude, crude jokes, this film is stupidly funny.
Very Good Girls (2013)
With two female protagonists, this film is a great watch for people who like women in comedy. We follow the story of two teenagers (Elizabeth Olsen and Dakota Fanning) making a pact to lose their virginity before college. Both girls fall for the same artist, which threatens their lifelong friendship. Like Superbad, we have two friends going on a journey that impacts their friendship for the better. It also concerns themes of growing up and sex.
