Summary

There are more corny one-liners and more intricate mythology to endure in “Like Calls to Like,” but this installment starts to let loose for a change. Shadow and Bone include some nifty fight sequences and intriguing characters, but it is still plagued by many tiring teenage tropes.

We recap the Netflix series Shadow and Bone Season 2 Episode 3, “Like Calls to Like,” which contains spoilers.

Alina (Jessie Mei Li) now has two amplifiers, and with this renewed strength, she heads toward the Fold. “Like Calls to Like” focuses on Alina’s attempts to eradicate the Fold whilst the Crows continue to gather intel on their enemy Pekka Rollins (Dean Lennox Kelly). And Kirigan (Ben Barnes) tries to manipulate those closest to him as he prepares to build an army that he hopes will take over the entire world.

Shadow and Bone Season 2 Episode 3 Recap

The episode opens with Alina readying herself for the coming battle. She feels a solid connection to the amplifiers within and demonstrates this new confidence to Mal. Sturmhond listens in to their conversation and asks to aid in their destruction of the Fold. He shows off his hidden inventions, separating the ship into two vehicles and showcasing a flying ship named Hummingbird. They float high above the ground and waste no time at all in heading straight into the shadowy Fold.

What stops Alina from destroying the Fold?

Once inside, Alina performs another light show, unleashing her new powers, which surge outwards into the darkness. The spell seems to be working, but then she has a vision of Kirigan and collapses, ruining her chances of destroying the Fold at that moment.

As the light diminishes, the Volcra creatures attack. Sturmhond’s team battles valiantly, passing through the storm and crash-landing on the other side of the Fold. They are quickly surrounded by another army, though.

What is Sturmhond’s true identity?

The army approaches, asking for the team to identify themselves. Sturmhond reveals his true identity; he is Nikolai Lantsov, Major of the 22nd Regiment, Soldier of the King’s Army, Grand Duke of Udova, second son of King Pyotr the Third, ruler of the Double Eagle Throne. Or, simply put, he’s just a fancy Prince.

Nikolai is updated on his family and the kingdom in general. Nikolai’s brother Vasily commands the First Army, and he wants to wage war on the Grisha (magic users). The rest of Nikolai’s family have fled to a sanctuary called the Spinning Wheel. He plans to head there first. At the Spinning Wheel, which acts as a refuge for the Grisha, Alina is reunited with Nadia and later meets with Zoya. Alina is informed that Ravka is on the verge of collapse and the Grisha are dying. Zoya wants to form an alliance with Alina to help her the best she can in fighting back.

Meanwhile, the Crows regroup after their heist. Kaz has the financial accounts of Pekka. They reveal fascinating information on his shady businesses. There is a glass factory in Appelbroek that seems to be the most misleading. Kaz sends Jesper and Wylan to check it out further. Jesper is annoyed by Kaz’s secrecy but follows his orders anyway. Nina asks for her payment now, which happens to be entry into Hellgate prison. Kaz tells her to look for a guard named Hiemstra, who can help her free her lover.

Who is Alby?

The next day at the Glass Factory, Jesper and Wylan discover secrets of Pekka’s operations. He is using his country estate for money laundering purposes. Jesper and Wylan break into this heavily guarded fortress to find more clues. It is revealed that Jesper and Wylan once slept together, which they discuss in more detail before infiltrating the building. Inside they find Pekka’s son Alby Rollins, a typical spoilt brat.

Why does Kaz hate Pekka?

Inej has done her own digging. She has found out that her attacker is called Mogens, the taxidermist. She has his address and wants to kill him straight away. Inej asks Kaz why he hates Pekka enough to gamble with their lives. Kaz admits that Pekka killed his brother, so he detests the man and wants revenge. They discuss killing Mogens. Kaz says to look for a weakness, implying that his own limp is actually just a piece of misdirection. Inej and Kaz then share a rather intimate moment and nearly kiss, but Nina interrupts them both.

Kaz visits Per to acquire some more helpers. Per doesn’t trust Kaz and orders his men to kill him. Kaz shows off his fighting prowess and defeats all of Per’s goons. He then recruits Per’s men, known as the Dregs. Inej fights her own battle, defeating the taxidermist Mogens. Jesper and Wylan return from their mission to update Kaz on Pekka’s operation. They don’t want Kaz to know about Pekka’s son, but he is already aware of the boy. Jesper reveals the boy’s name to Kaz in the end.

In Kirigan’s narrative, the villain gathers his troops, although all his team has been forced to work alongside him. He even keeps his poor mother in a cage. Baghra refuses to help Kirigan, though, and he cuts off her finger. At Kirigan’s fortress, Genya is reunited with David Kostyk (Luke Pasqualino). Genya urges him to escape, warning David of Kirigan’s dangerous powers. Kirigan orders David to study Morozova’s journal to find any clues to help him with his ailments. Genya and David plan their escape in secret, hoping to warn Alina of Kirigan’s return.

Shadow and Bone Season 2 Episode 3 Ending Explained

Kirigan is told of Alina’s failed attempts to destroy the Fold. This proves that she has acquired the Sea Whip as an extra amplifier. He asks Baghra for the location of a third amplifier called the Firebird. Baghra says she doesn’t know where it is, but she adds that Alina will be unstoppable if she gains it first. Genya and David try to escape, but Kirigan stops Genya from leaving. David manages to flee, taking the journal with him.

Nina heads to Hellgate to find and free her lover, Matthias. She meets with the guard Hiemstra, but he asks her to speak with him after the fight. The prison is notorious for corrupt prison fights, and one is currently underway. Matthias is dragged into the arena, and he kills his foe. Nina watches as Matthias passes her by; she calls out his name but gains the attention of Pekka, who is in the audience. Pekka asks Nina to bring him, Kaz in return for Matthias’ safety.

Alina is still recovering from her failed attempts at destroying the Fold. Mal suggests they locate the third amplifier, the Firebird, to give Alina even more strength. They worry that they will be hunted down for their reward money while searching for this creature. Nikolai suggests protecting Alina by making her a part of the family. He believes a proposal and engagement would help matters and strengthen allegiances. Alina is initially against the idea, but Mal thinks it may actually work. In the final moments of the episode, Alina tells Nikolai that she has made her decision.
