The Prime Video series Swarm debuted at the 2023 South by Southwest Festival. The seven-episode series is loosely based on the true story of how a girl’s obsession with a pop star takes a twisted turn for the worse. With all episodes releasing at once, we are left with the question, will there be a second season? We share all the details we know and possible theories of where the series can go if renewed below.
Throughout the series, we follow Dre (Dominique Fishback), an awkward foster kid who struggles to find her place in the world. One thing that keeps her going daily is Ni’Jah (Nirine S. Brown), a massive superstar with groupies called the “bee-hive.” I enjoyed most of what creators Donald Glover and Janine Nabers gave us in the series because the birth of social media helped us see the obsession with celebrities on a new level.
As you peel back the layers of Dre, you empathize with her backstory but can’t help but be scared of what she has become. Dominique Fishback, who played Dre, knocked this performance out of the park. The overall series is loud and proud with its message, and it will be interesting to see how audiences take it.
Will there be a Season 2 of Swarm – renewed or canceled status
There is no news on the renewal of season two of Swarm. After debuting at the 2023 South by Southwest Festival, the reviews were mixed but settled in at 79% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
The one thing I’ll be interested to see is the audience score when it finally comes out. Prime Video either releases its series all at once or in a weekly format. With Swarm releasing with the binge model, I imagine opinions will fly out relatively fast. I think the audience score will play a big part in its renewal.
Regarding my thoughts on where they could head with season two, we know the story is based on actual events, so the possibilities are endless. We all know that Donald Glover has a creative mind and is well-respected within Hollywood. I could easily see him explore more stories like the ones featured in this and do it within any era. I think he could also tap into the world of movies and television and that obsession if he didn’t want to go down the path of music again.
Another thing I think it has in its favor is the guest stars they had in the show that will have people talking. From Billie Eilish to Paris Jackson to Rory Culkin, you had several stars pop up throughout the season. You have those fanbases that will be excited to see their artists within the series.
