Up Here is a romantic comedy musical series from the hugely successful songwriting duo of Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez (Frozen and WandaVision), who created the music that this Hulu original series is adapted.
They have also provided the original songs for the show as well. Episodes are written by Steven Levenson (tick, tick… BOOM! and Dear Evan Hansen) and Danielle Sanchez-Witzel (New Girl and The Carmichael Show), with Thomas Kail (Hamilton) in the director’s chair.
The series follows writer Lindsay (Mae Whitman), and banker Miguel (Carlos Valdes), who are both looking for success in their work lives and love lives in the hustle and bustle of New York City. The show is set near the end of 1999, with the new millennium and Y2K looming ever nearer.
Lindsay escapes to the Big Apple to pursue her writing dreams while Miguel slowly rises through the ranks at work. They quickly fall in love with one another but find that the voices in their heads and their self-doubts are getting in the way of this perfect romance.
Separating this series from countless others in the genre, Lindsay and Miguel have their own sets of opinionated and unruly inner voices, which are portrayed more like imaginary friends that the audience can see, appearing as fully-formed manifestations on the screen. Oh, and they sing and dance too.
With such a stunning creative team working behind the scenes on Up Here and a surprisingly solid cast to enjoy on the screen as well, it would seem likely that Hulu would want to renew the series for a second season. However, reviews haven’t been perfect for this original series so far. Let’s discuss the show’s renewal status in more depth.
Will there be a Season 2 of the Up Here – renewed or canceled status
Hulu is yet to announce whether Up Here will be renewed for a second season or if the musical rom-com will be canceled after just one season.
Up Here marks the first-ever musical series to be released by the streaming platform, and it boasts one hell of a lineup, both in front of and behind the cameras. Looking at the talent involved, you’d think that this would be a guaranteed hit for Hulu, but I found the first season to be surprisingly disappointing myself, and reviews have been mixed so far.
It remains to be seen what the other critics and the general public will think of the show. But the critical scores and the overall ratings for Hulu will likely decide this show’s fate.
I think the show will be renewed, regardless of the critical consensus. This series has enough positives to make it worth a watch, and the ending hints at plenty more still to come.

I really hope they make a second season. I thought this was something good to watch. Romance, comedy and music all in one for a series is really awesome. Plus the actors couldn’t have been better.
I loved everything about it. I wasn’t planning on it but I ended up binge watching it in one day! I’m really hoping there will be a Season 2!!!
I loved Mae in her last show and she is awesome in Up Here, what a beautiful voice. I hope to see a season 2.
I loved this series! Watched it twice already! The music is great and the actors are fantastic! The singing is top notch and the dance numbers are fun. Hopefully there will be more big dance numbers in season 2. Two thumbs up from me!
