The pilot of The Night Agent has shades of 24 but is more underwhelming than expected.

We recap the Netflix series The Night Agent Season 1 Episode 1, “The Call,” which contains spoilers.

Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) is an FBI agent. He is riding a subway train when he gives up his seat to a mother and her young daughter. While standing, he notices a man giving an ominous vibe. The man puts a book bag under a seat and leaves.

Peter checks the bag and sees a bomb inside. He pulls the emergency handle and asks everyone to exit the subway car. People begin to rush when one of them yells, “Bomb!”, and a few minutes later, it blows up, sending Peter into the cement wall.

It’s an exciting premise for a series that has shades of 24.

The Night Agent Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

Later, after saving dozens of people and receiving medical attention, the agent spots the bomber in the crowd. Peter chases the man, who attacks the young agent from behind when he turns a corner and checks a dumpster for the terrorist. As they fight, punches are thrown, then the man gets away. However, not before we see a large tattoo on the side of his body, a giant snake.

Who is Rose?

Rose is the niece of two secret agents and witnesses a murder. After his heroic acts, Peter is put on night duty, taking phone calls in the basement of the White House. Why? He is a night agent, a highly trained secret agent program where these agents handle problems—like, lending support or recovering American spies.

Peter receives a phone call from Rose. She is a woman who woke up and heard her aunt talking about how they could not trust someone at the White House. Rose also overheard that they had to warn someone named Osprey. And that someone was outside, so they couldn’t leave because Rose was there, so they needed to fight.

Who killed Rose’s family?

We don’t know precisely at first, but as Rose leaves, two masked assailants kill her aunt and uncle as she escapes. One of them sees Rose out the window, and she runs. The man gives chase, but Rose manages to get to the house nearby that’s closed for the season.

She calls the number, and Peter picks up, then says, “Night Action,” and Rose gives him the code. Peter asks Rose if this is “Sidewinder” or “Gazelle,” but she has no idea what this means. Rose explains what’s going on. Peter sends cops to both homes before the assailant can hurt Rose. The killers escape.

Peter arrives at the scene and is told by Dianne Farr to take Rose into his custody because they cannot trust anyone, including the Deputy Director of the FBI, Hawkins. Peter leaves with her and collects items from his apartment, but sets up a camera and leaves Rose’s cell phone.

As they drive, they are chased by the same assailants, exchanging gunfire. Instead of outrunning them, Peter reverses the car and takes them head-on, smashing the bad guy’s car and leaving them on the bridge. When he gets Rose to safety, he lets her sleep and watches his apartment with the camera he set up.

What’s on the ring the assassin is wearing?

The assassin enters Peter’s apartment, and the camera captures him wearing a ring with a crest on it. However, he does not recognize the symbol. It’s the same man who chased Rose. Peter notifies the FBI, but when they arrive, he is gone.

They must have been tracking Rose’s phone. Peter takes a screenshot of the man with the gun and focuses on the ring. The item is gold, with a crest with a cross, swords, and two birds.

The Night Agent Season 1 Episode 1 Ending Explained

The episode ends with a married couple with an infant outside a home manipulating their way inside under the pretense the mother used to live there. The owner of the house allows them to come inside.

When they get inside, the father asks to use the bathroom to change the child’s diaper. However, the woman’s radar is up because the mother mentions how she used to play on the deck outside. A deck that was only put up a couple of years ago. That’s when the father comes from behind and strangles the woman to death.

What did the killers steal?

We see the parents/killers leave, holding a bag, but we don’t know what they took. They found what they were looking for, but what was it?

The last scene shows the child sitting happily in their car seat at the dinner table. A news story is on in the background. They commented on how a baby had been taken from a mall several hours prior.

The guy is carrying the car seat when they walk into the ladies house. To find out where she fits into the story line you will have to watch the rest of the episodes. Eventually you will see what they had stolen and what it has to do with everything else.
