We recap the FX on Hulu series Great Expectations (2023) Season 1 Episode 4, which contains spoilers.
As the relationship between Pip (Fionn Whitehead) and Jaggers (Ashley Thomas) continues to have its highs and lows, in Great Expectations Episode 4, we continue to see Jaggers make Pip into something he might not be able to become. Between Jaggers and Drummle (Matthew Needham) on the verge of marrying Estella (Shalom Brune-Franklin), Pip might be unable to control his anticipation any longer.
Great Expectations Season 1 Episode 4 Recap
The episode begins with Estella dreaming about escaping the house to escape Miss Havisham. Miss Havisham tells Estella she stayed up all night washing and pressing her clothes and that her meeting with Mr. Drummle is far too important.
We see Drummle meeting with Pip, who brings up that he is meeting his wife today, which drums up some feelings because Pip knows it’s Estella.
At a bar, we see Pip getting a little wasted, and one man begins to fight him. He gets the best of Pip when Jaggers arrives to save the day. We quickly realize that this was all a setup and Jaggers needed something from the man. A nervous Pip accidentally fires the gun, and it almost hits Jaggers. Although Pip continues to press Jaggers, Jaggers doesn’t care and stands his ground.
What happens when Drummle and Estella meet?
The moment we’ve all been waiting for has arrived with Estella in the city, and everyone is on their feet. When she walks into the room to meet Drummle, she realizes it’s Pip and is slightly thrown off by it. We get a small talk between them as we find out that Miss Havisham and Drummle agreed to only thirty minutes of their meeting.
Because her eyes wander to Pip several times, Drummle raises his voice, telling her to keep her eyes on him. The meeting was a bit awkward between the two, with Drummle establishing his dominance in the relationship.
In the carriage, Pip explains to Estella that she can’t marry Drummle. However, she tells him that Miss Havisham will disinherit her if she doesn’t. She tells him, “You can love me, Pip,” but a wedding dress awaits me, and I must marry Drummle. After Pip leaves the carriage, we see Estella break into tears.
Why does Estella go to Pip’s hometown?
Estella heads back to meet with Joe to tell him that Pip doesn’t look good in London. She follows by telling him that he needs to write to him and call him home. While still in town, Estella makes her way to meet with Biddy.
She forwarns her that she must get Pip to stop loving her as she is aware that she is in love with him. Regardless of everyone thinking that Estella is cold-hearted, we see she went to Pip’s hometown to get him help before it is too late.
We see Estella practicing dance when Miss Havisham walks up to ask her to be honest and tell her who she is dancing with. She said maybe it was the blacksmith boy, and not for the love for him but in spite of her.
Great Expectations Season 1 Episode 4 Ending Explained
We find out that there is a large shipment of opium coming into the docks. Jaggers has made the decision that he will collect it all as he is negotiating with a woman. Pip wasn’t able to stay long as he continued to struggle within the city. After making the deals, Jaggers says that London will either make or kill him, and Pip thinks it will make him.
