Summary

After a promising start, The Big Door Prize is starting to feel somewhat repetitive and uneventful. The humor falls flat in “Trina,” and the quirky setups seem forced. There are still some intriguing plot twists and more character development to enjoy, but it’s losing my interest overall.

We recap the Apple TV+ series The Big Door Prize Season 1 Episode 5, “Trina,” which contains spoilers.

The Big Door Prize focuses on Dusty’s daughter Trina (Djouliet Amara). She’s struggling to recover after her boyfriend Kolton’s death. On the eve of his birthday, Trina reassesses her life choices and tries to move forwards.

Meanwhile, Dusty (Chris O’Dowd) attempts to spice things up in his marriage by taking Cass (Gabrielle Dennis) away for the weekend.

The Big Door Prize Season 1 Episode 5 Recap

The episode starts with Trina on the roof of Giorgio’s restaurant, where she begins to vandalize his sign with a baseball bat. Dusty tries to calm Giorgio down afterward, explaining that it was Kolton’s funeral only the day before; Trina’s extremely emotional at the moment. Giorgio is fuming but decides to let Trina off, only to please Cass, who he adores.

Why does Trina feel guilty?

Father Reuben talks with Trina on the day of Kolton’s birthday. Trina admits that she can no longer confide in her parents or friends. But she feels guilty about Kolton’s death. Father Reuben states that it is not Trina’s fault; Kolton died in a freak car accident. Trina implies that it was, in fact, somehow her fault, although she refuses to open up to the priest.

Trina asks Jacob about his birthday plans; he’s having a movie night with his father, Beau. While the other students are going to a party. Trina hasn’t been invited to either. Even her parents have ditched her.

They’ve gone to Martha and Rose’s Inn for the weekend. The parents seem entirely unaware of Trina’s situation, and the daughter refuses to tell them about the importance of the day herself.

Cass is excited about the getaway but is upset to find out where they’re heading. She still thinks Martha hates her, blaming her for ruining her marriage to Cass’ mother, Izzy.

Once at the renovated hotel, Martha and Rose introduce them to their new home for the weekend. The couple is given the worst room in the building, though, the crew’s quarters, only further proving Cass’ point.

Meanwhile, back at home, Trina decides to visit Jacob. The teens talk about Kolton, both agreeing that he was never a saint. Jacob remembers the darker times, the things that annoyed him about his twin brother. It is revealed that Jacob and Trina started to hang out together more because Kolton would bail on her to be with his friends.

Why did Trina smash Giorgio’s sign?

They watch a film with Beau and discuss Kolton some more. Beau is upset to find out that he doesn’t really know his son at all, getting his favorite film wrong.

Jacob and Trina talk about how Kolton was a bit of a jokester. Trina says that she smashed up Giorgio’s sign as a homage to Kolton, turning the name into a rude joke.

At the hotel, Dusty and Cass are forced to watch some of Mr. Johnson’s magic and then socialize with a random couple. The wife in the couple, Hawaii, is a rather sexual person, and she instigates a threesome with Dusty and Cass.

The couple are taken aback but eager to broaden their horizons, so they agree to this new sexual adventure.

Dusty starts to undress, although he falls, hitting his head on the floor in the process. Cass goes to get ice while Hawaii notices the blue dots on Dusty’s butt. There are nine of them now.

While Cass is getting ice, she sees Martha by the veranda, looking sad and forlorn. She strikes up a conversation with her. Martha wants to know how Cass is doing. Cass says how she thought Martha hated her, blaming her for the breakdown of her marriage. Martha denies this accusation.

The real reason they split up was because of Izzy’s obsession with her dance career. Martha wanted to continue to see Cass after the divorce, but Izzy said Cass didn’t want that.

Cass was lied to by her own mother, causing this friction. Upset, Cass asks Dusty to take her home.

The Big Door Prize Season 1 Episode 5 Ending

What did Trina’s Morpho card really say?

Trina decides to open up more to Beau. She admits that she lied about her Morpho card; her card actually said liar on it. Trina adds that she was a bad girlfriend, cheating on Kolton. This implies that Trina and Jacob were together before Kolton’s death. Angered by Trina’s truths, Beau asks her to leave.

In the final moments of the episode, Beau speaks with Jacob alone. He says that he wants to know more about his son, for there to be no more secrets between them. Then Beau takes a chainsaw to the kitchen table as you do.
