Summary

Although off to a slow start, it feels like there’s more to this college and storyline than we’ve seen.

We recap the Crunchyroll anime series The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Episode 2, “Birds of a feather flock together. I,” which contains spoilers.

Despite his aversion to the idea, Elias (Ryota Takeuchi) and Chise (Atsumi Tanezaki) made some significant changes last week, taking up residence at the college for sorcerers.

Although Chise is technically there as a research subject, attending college gives her a chance to not only meet other people but to hone her magic skills as well.

While her first encounter didn’t get off on quite the right foot, with time, hopefully, Chise will be able to fit in with her peers and maybe even find a way to break her curses too.

The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Episode 2 Recap

The episode opens with Elias walking the halls of the college in one of his human forms. It seems like the newest teacher. He has chosen the female form with long white hair and red eyes.

The girl Chise caught in the courtyard wakes up and reveals she passes out when she gets nervous. To help with her condition, Chise offers the girl teas and lavender scents in exchange for feedback one day, as Elias said she should always get compensation for her services.

Although Chise forgets to ask the name of the girl she helped in the courtyard, the audience soon learns her name is Philomela and that she is also a student at the college.

Who is Narcisse Maugham?

Narcisse Maugham is a teacher at the college who leads the very first class Chise attends.

What is the difference between mages and sorcerers?

Elias starts his class by describing the difference between mages and sorcerers. He says that mages “take in magic power from their surroundings” while sorcerers “create magic power within themselves.”

Why does the salamander attack May?

After giving a lesson on magic and getting aid from magical creatures, Elias assigns his students the task of getting magical creatures to help them light candles, but only if the creature is willing.

When a fire salamander refuses to help a student named May, he grows upset, insulting the lizard, causing it to grow angry and attack him.

What is a Muryan?

After saving May’s life in his true form, Elias suggests that all his students who do not have an aptitude for magic just quit now to protect themselves before dismissing them. As they leave, the students wonder if Elias is a Muryan like Alexandra, meaning someone who is transfigured after too much experimentation.

On her way to meet Elias, Chise runs into another student who introduces himself as Rian Scrimgeour and asks if she’ll teach him magic. Before she can answer, the episode ends with two suspicious people entering a top-secret room in the college basement.

It felt like a lot to learn in this week’s episode, as fans were introduced to multiple new characters and definitions throughout Chise’s day. The excitement at the end was short-lived but still fun in an otherwise pretty relaxed episode.

Obviously, the series is trying to lay the foundation for the rest of the season by slowly introducing new elements and characters. However, with only half the episodes of season one this time, here’s hoping it doesn’t take too long for things to get interesting.
