Obsession is a four-part Netflix 2023 adaptation of Josephine Hart’s 1991 novel Damage and will be likely to get tongues wagging after its debut thanks to the unintentional hilarity of its premise, which revolves around a respected surgeon getting into an ill-advised BDSM relationship with his son’s fiancé, Anna.
Here’s a quote from our review:
The clue is in the title. It’s about a man who destroys himself and his family over an animalistic lust he can barely contain. It’s about our basest impulses overriding our circuitry, sending us mad. But at one point, Richard Armitage aggressively tries to have sex with a bed and starts crying, so it’s quite difficult to take seriously.
You know what people are like, though, so there’s every chance this might become quite popular. In that case, here’s everything we know about the show’s potential future:
Will there be a Season 2 of Obsession on Netflix?
Renewed or canceled status: TBC
At the time of writing there are no plans for a second season of Obsession.
The series was explicitly billed as a limited series. While this isn’t always set in stone, it’s genuinely a good indicator of a complete story that is only intended to run for a single season. Of course, if Obsession were to radically overperform relative to expectations, the conversation might change, but that’s unlikely.
The series will likely do well give its subject matter and attractive stars, but that doesn’t necessarily mean its future is secured, and Netflix have proven they have no compunctions about cutting the cord with properties that fans seem to love.
The source material was also a one-and-done affair. While the Netflix version takes some creative liberties, it proceeds along roughly the same lines. The story has already been adapted before as a feature film, and there’s little about the execution in the series to suggest there’s more story to tell here. Any lingering ambiguity is very much intentional.
With all this in mind our official prediction is that Obsession will not be renewed for a second season, but as ever, we’ll update this article whenever we know more.
