We recap the FX on Hulu series Great Expectations (2023) Season 1 Episode 5, which contains spoilers.
We are on the verge of the Great Expectations season finale. With that, there is plenty to unwrap with us finding out why Jaggers (Ashley Thomas) is involved with Pip (Fionn Whitehead). A new man is hunting to marry Estella (Shalom Brune-Franklin) while she finds out who her birth father might be.
Great Expectations Season 1 Episode 5 Recap
The episode begins with Pip smoking and having some delusions of Miss Havisham. Jaggers says they have business to attend to before the smoke kicks in.
On their way to get the stuff, Jaggers tells him that Drummle must sign over his portion. However, as they are walking around, Pip is grabbed by a man who pulls a knife on him. We realize that it is Compeyson who wants something that Pip has. Before carving something on his face, Pip can hit him and break free.
Who is Estella’s second option as a husband?
Miss Havisham has gathered Herbert and Estella at the table. She enlights Herbert that Estella has refused to make a choice about when she wants to get married. Because of this, she is not introducing her second option as a husband, which is Herbert himself.
Of course, he is elated because he has always had a crush on him.
How do Jaggers and Pip get Drummle to sign the paperwork?
Jaggers has been working quite hard to get Drummle to sign over the paperwork to him for the shipments. Finally, he and Pip hang out with Drummle and take advantage of his state by getting him drunk. After they get him drunk, he signs the paperwork, and Jaggers gets what he wants.
Miss Havisham begins to test Herbert by seeing if he is able to dance. After he and Estella dance together, Estella informs Miss Havisham that she will marry Herbert and can now forget about her first choice. This makes Miss Havisham incredibly angry, and she calls out for Estella but storms away.
We get an extensive back-and-forth conversation between Jaggers and Pip about Compeyson. While Pip demands answers, Jaggers tells him he is sworn to secrecy.
Pip speaks out into the universe that soon Drummle will be out of the way, and he and Estella can be together. Upon returning home, Joe arrives to talk to him. Joe tries to explain his concerns, but Pip doesn’t have them. It frustrates him, and Pip snaps at him, saying he will soon be a very wealthy man.
Pip says he has to go, but after Joe tells him that it was Estella’s idea for him to come and visit. Of course, Joe explains that Estella told him to come to get him and that Pip should come home and marry Biddy.
Pip doesn’t believe him and tells him to go home and tell everyone that he will never return.
Who does Jaggers put in charge of protecting Pip?
Jaggers is starting to be concerned with Pip and his safety. Because of this, Jaggers has enlisted Wemmick to get Pip somewhere where he will be safe from any troubles.
Compeyson has headed to Pip’s house and finds Herbert, who he begins questioning about where Pip is. However, when he threatens to pull the trigger, Jaggers arrives with a gun to Compeyson’s head. He takes him captive, and we transition to Estella, who seems to be on the verge of killing herself. However, Magwitch stops her.
What does Magwitch reveal to Estella?
She asks why he stopped her and how he knows her name. He says, “I know it because I gave it to you, and as I am your father.” Estella has a befuddled look on her face.
Jaggers and Compeyson argue over why Magwitch gave Pip all the money from the robbery. Jaggers begins to explain that is what Magwitchh told him to do. His instruction was when he turned 18 bring him to London and turn him into a gentleman. Finally, he tells him to leave the boy alone and knocks him out.
Great Expectations Season 1 Episode 5 Ending Explained
Estella begins to question Magwitch and why she should trust him. She wants him to prove he knows who she is with facts. As the episode ends, he tells her stories about him and her mother, followed by telling her to tell Miss Havisham that today is the day that everything changes.
