We discuss 10 Movies like Green Book you must watch. Add these well-recommended films to your watch list.
Green Book is the 2019 film starring Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali. It is inspired by the true story of a 1962 tour of the Deep South by African American pianist Don Shirley and Italian American bouncer and later actor Frank “Tony Lip” Vallelonga, who served as Shirley’s driver and bodyguard.
Despite their differences, the two soon develop an unexpected bond while confronting racism and danger in an era of segregation.

10 Movies like Green Book
The Help (2011)
Set in the early 60s in Jackson, Mississippi, The Help follows the stories of African-American women working as maids for white families. Starring Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer in the roles of Aibileen Clark and Minny Jackson, they become the source for the stories for an aspiring Caucasian journalist, played by Emma Stone.
The Help is an eye-opening story that is hard-hitting with some hilarious moments. Like Green Book, we have people with different backgrounds and experiences coming together, sharing their lives, and raising awareness around racial abuse and tension in the USA.
Hidden Figures (2016)
This is an extraordinary film that should be watched by everyone. The acting is some of the highest I have seen with a poignant, important story. Based on the book of the same name by Margot Lee Shetterly, Hidden Figures tells the true story of three women who work in the racially segregated division of NASA.
Django Unchained (2012)
One of Tarantino’s best films, in my opinion, starring incredible actors, including Christoph Waltz, Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Samuel L Jackson. Similar to Green Book, we have two men, one white and one black, sharing stories and creating an unexpected bond.
The story surrounds Django, a slave who, when freed, joins forces with a bounty hunter to rescue his wife.
12 Years a Slave (2014)
This film is based on the story of Solomon Northup, a free African-American who is promised a fortnightly job by Brown and Hamilton. After arriving in Washington, DC, he realizes he has been sold into slavery. The film is brutal and violent and showcases slavery in its most harrowing form.
The Colour Purple (1985)
Based on the novel of the same name, The Colour Purple is the emotional story of Celie, a young African-American woman who is raped by her father and bears two of his children. Celie is then married off to an abusive man and has a struggle-filled existence.
What makes it so powerful is the film is told through Celie’s painful, honest letters to God.
The Butler (2013)
An emotionally charged film, The Butler tells the story of significant events in America, such as the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War, and how they affect the life of a butler, Cecil. Cecil served eight presidents at the White House and calls into question the government’s role in the racial tensions and movements in the USA.
Moonlight (2016)
Focusing on the black male identity and sexuality, this powerful film tells the story of Chiron, a young African-American boy growing up in Miami who seeks guidance from a drug dealer, who influences him and his future.
Get Out (2017)
The horror-drama film by Jordan Peele took the world by storm. Chris, an African-American man, decides to visit his Caucasian girlfriend’s parents during a weekend getaway. Sounds simple and nice enough?
While they seem normal at first, Chris is not prepared to experience the horrors ahead. This film tackles timely issues related to race in a very thought-provoking and innovative way.
Driving Miss Daisy (1990)
Similar to Green Book, here we have a film where the two protagonists are black and white, who form a bond, this one over a twenty-year span. The film explores death, racial discrimination, and true life lessons.
Starring Jessica Tandy as an old Southern Jewish lady and Morgan Freeman as her African-American driver give outstanding performances.
To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)
I’m finishing this list with one of my favorite books, films, and stage plays. Based on the book of the same name by Harper Lee, To Kill A Mockingbird is set during the Depression Era in Maycomb, Alabama, and tells the story of the Finch family.
The father, Atticus, is a lawyer, and when defending a black man, Tom Robinson, from raping a young white girl, he falls under intense scrutiny from his town. His children, especially his inquisitive daughter Scout, have their own journey of learning about prejudice and racism and not judging a book by its cover.
It’s honest, brutal, and beautiful to watch.
