Sometimes loving someone means sacrificing for them, and no one realized that more than Einar (Shunsuke Takeuchi) this week, as he and Thorfinn (Yuto Uemura) put everything on the line to help Arnheid (Mayumi Sako).
What seemed like a perfect plan to help Arnheid and Gardar escape turned complicated when Snake (Fuminori Komatsu) caught onto their scheme earlier than expected. Even the help of Sverkel (Mugihito) wasn’t enough to save them in the end, leaving Thorfinn to engage with Snake himself.
Despite taking a vow of peace, Thorfinn is beginning to realize that some situations must be solved with combat to do what’s right.
- Thorfinn runs after a frantic Einar, trying to talk some sense into him as he searches for Arnheid.
- Arnheid regretfully explains how she cut Gardar’s ropes before he killed a guard.
- After killing the guards, Arnheid says Gardar suffered a severe injury. She was only able to hide him with the help of Sverkel.
- Believing that Gardar has escaped, Snake and his men watch Arnheid closely, waiting for the moment he comes to visit her.
- Instead of killing Gardar, Sverkel suggests Snake give up his sword instead. He suggests Snake try farming and cultivating life instead of taking it.
- In order to help Arnheid and Gardar escape, Einar dresses up in a cloak to confuse the guards into thinking he is Gardar.
- Thorfinn asks Sverkel to borrow a wagon.
- Sverkel suggests they also put him on the wagon to avoid any questions from guards.
- After growing suspicious of the cloaked man, Snake returns to the farm to find Thorfinn trying to help Gardar and Arnheid into the wagon.
- Thorfinn realizes he may have to engage Snake in combat. As Snake initiates contact with his sword, Thorfinn retaliates with his fists.
- The episode ends with Thorfinn taking up his old fighting stance, fully preparing to fight Snake.
Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 17 Release Date and Time
Episode 17 will be released on both Netflix and Crunchyroll on Monday, May 1st, 2023. The release time is 11:30 a.m E.T. Episode 17 is titled “Way Home” and will have a run time of approximately 23 minutes.

Predictions
While I was right about Thorfinn and Einar helping Arnheid last week, I was wrong about Sverkel’s potential death, and I’m glad I was. He turned out to be an essential part of this week’s plan to try and help Arnheid escape and, honestly, more levelheaded than most people on the farm seem to be. Although they got caught in the act, he was essential to this week’s episode and could be next week as well.
- Despite the build-up, I could see Thorfinn and Snake not fighting next episode. It looked like everyone was surprised to see Thorfinn’s combat skill after the first strike, which could deter Snake from fighting him.
- In the preview for next week, we see Arnheid and Gardar driving off in a wagon. I would not be surprised if Snake listened to Sverkel and just decided to let them leave instead.
