It’s been an exciting Anime Winter 2023 season so far, with many fan favorites premiering new seasons. One of the most anticipated returns this year has been the Viking epic, Vinland Saga, which follows a young boy named Thorfinn on his quest for revenge. So far, it has not disappointed, reminding viewers just what it is about the series that keeps them coming back while adding fresh new characters and stories to keep it interesting. If you enjoyed Vinland Saga, here are 10 other anime shows like it that you might enjoy as well.

10 Anime Shows like Vinland Saga you must watch

Fena: Pirate Princess (2021)

Fena: Pirate Princess tells the story of a young orphan girl who escapes her captors to set sail with a crew of ninjas. It’s set in the 18th century, so it has a historical feel to it as well. While it doesn’t follow Vikings, the series follows pirates and has some memorable ship battles like Vinland. On top of a compelling, original story, this anime had some strikingly gorgeous animation and character designs that make it hard to forget. It’s a shame this series hasn’t announced a second season because fans would surely line up for it.

Castlevania (2017)

This Netflix original often teeters the line on whether it is or isn’t an anime among fans. Still, it’s definitely a must-watch series regardless, with an anime-style animation to it. Based on the video game franchise of the same name, this series follows the story of Dracula, his descendants, and the people who hunt him. While this has a lot more fantasy elements in it, fans of Vinland Saga will appreciate the epic fight sequences, as well as the older setting.

Attack on Titan (2013)

Attack on Titan follows a boy named Eren Jaeger, who is determined to get revenge after massive humanoid monsters called Titans, destroy his home and kill his mother. Despite how different they are, there’s plenty about the series that will resonate with Vinland Saga fans. Like Thorfinn, Eren’s primary motivations are revenge and retribution. They both have a lot taken from them at a young age and must grow up quickly, which doesn’t always lead to the best decision-making.

Demon Slayer (2019)

Like Vinland Saga, Demon Slayer tells the story of a son looking to get revenge for his family. In this series, Tanjiro is driven to become a demon slayer by vengeance but also to save his sister, who has become a demon herself. If you’re a fan of the well-choreographed fights in Vinland, you’ll be blown away by Demon Slayer as well.

Violet Evergarden (2018)

Violet Evergarden was once a deadly soldier, raised as nothing more than a weapon for battle. However, with the war now over, she seeks to understand the feelings she never learned to recognize through her new job as an Auto Memories Doll. Like Thorfinn, Violet’s life revolves around violence from a young age. There’s always life after war or vengeance, and this series gives viewers an emotional look at what that’s like.

Golden Kamuy (2018)

There’s never a shortage of historically set anime, but Golden Kamuy picks a slightly more recent era: the early 1900s. The story follows Saichi Sugimoto, a war veteran who now works panning gold. After hearing the legend of gold that can only be found following a map of tattoos, Saichi soon finds himself searching for it with a young girl named Asirpa. This epic adventure anime is not only exciting to watch, but the dynamic between Aspira and Sugimoto, although not exactly the same as Thorfinn and Askeladd, does have some familial similarities.

Yasuke (2021)

This might be one of the more controversial entries on the list, but there are definitely some elements of Yasuke that fans of historical dramas will appreciate. This adaptation isn’t exactly what you would call accurate, but it’s a cool, reimagined look at the legendary “black samurai” story. Like Vinland Saga, the story is loosely based on the lives of real people, even if this series takes quite a few more radical liberties with the story.

Rurouni Kenshin (1996)

Once a fearsome assassin known as Battousai: The Man Slayer, Kenshin has since abandoned his old moniker and life in favor of living a simpler, more relaxed existence. Instead, he vows never to kill again, even modifying his sword to ensure it. However, just because he has retired doesn’t mean his former enemies have.

This is another anime that takes place in a historical setting and has plenty of thrilling action to keep viewers hooked. On top of the fights, the story of your past coming back to haunt you and revenge is one that Vinland Saga fans will surely be able to enjoy and appreciate.

Dororo (2019)

Daigo Kagemitsu’s land is dying, and he would do anything to save it, including sacrificing his unborn’s first son’s organs to demons to save it. Despite being born without limbs or skin and more, the child still manages to live, at least long enough to be abandoned by his father. After being saved by a medicine man, the boy eventually grows up, seeking revenge and reclaiming his body parts from the demons that took them, until he eventually meets and befriends a young boy named, Dororo. Much like Vinland Saga, this story is one of perseverance, survival, and revenge and how the pursuit of those things can often send you down paths you never expected.

Berserk (1997)

This dark fantasy series is one fans of the more mature storylines in Vinland Saga will appreciate. It tells the story of a mercenary named Guts, who, after being taken in by The Band of Hawk, is one of few to survive when the leader sacrifices the group members in exchange for power. It’s a gritty story about vengeance that many anime lovers hold in high regard for its storytelling capabilities and its strong interpretation of the more thought-provoking themes surrounding life and war.
